Bike Shop Essentials

Today, no self-respecting bike shop owner conducts business without an ultrasonic cleaner. For rapidly cleaning bike parts in bulk there's nothing that comes close. Ultrasonic cleaners have long been used for a variety of industrial and hobby applications, from microchips and aerospace components to watch parts and coins. Back in the day ultrasonic cleaners were the domain of scientists and surgeons who used them to clean precision equipment. Nowadays you can get hold of one for next to nothing and they don't require much thought to use. They are to a mechanic or a watchmaker what a dishwasher is to a restaurant.

How Do Ultrasonic Cleaners Work?

photo from: http://www.sxc.hu/profile/sritenouUltrasonic cleaners are able to do their work through the application of ultrasound (high frequency sound waves). Typically they comprise a tank filled with water, sometimes mixed with cleaning reagents, through which ultrasound is passed. The ultrasound causes the process of cavitation (microscopic bubble collapse) sending small shockwaves through the surrounding liquid. Put your bike chain, nuts, derailleur, etc. into the ultrasonic cleaner and sit back while it gently massages the grease, mud, and general grime away like a mini jacuzzi. However, before you rush out and buy yourself an ultrasonic cleaner, there are various options to consider.

Keep Bike Parts in Pristine Condition With an Ultrasonic Cleaner

First, how much and how often do you need ultrasonic cleaning? Models range from those with less than a gallon capacity to those with tanks large enough to fit car parts in. Generally, the smaller the ultrasonic cleaner, the less it will cost. However, don't automatically home in on the bargain bucket, but bear in mind how much and how frequently you're going to need it as well.

Second, some models come with a temperature controller. There will be different optimum temperatures for cleaning different components, materials, and for removing different kinds of dirt. For cleaning bike parts, 160°F is usually considered optimum. However, consider exactly what you're cleaning and what cleaning solution, if any you're using. There's a world of literature suggesting what temperatures are best for what application, and the best place for you to start is probably the manual.

Finally then, many types of cleaning solution exist for different applications. Some have more aggressive chemistries than others. Choosing between chemistries is often a balance of cleaning power versus preserving the items to be cleaned (if for example they're delicate). Washing-up liquid is a good start to determine whether or not you will need a specialized cleaning solution for your specific application.

Benefits of Having an Ultrasonic Cleaner

You Can Even Use It for Other Cleaning Needs

Effectively Clean Bike Parts With an Ultrasonic CleanerOne of the most outstanding benefits of the ultrasonic cleaner has to be its ability to clean in places you can't easily get to. A bike chain, for example, is made up of individual links which are a nightmare to clean between. The ultrasonic cleaner causes shockwaves that are so small that they will get right in between the links.

Using an ultrasonic cleaner to augment your more traditional cleaning methods can save you time and energy. More importantly it will clean the places you wouldn't normally be able to reach, greatly extending the life of your bike parts. The bottom line: ultrasonic cleaning is both affordable and efficient.
