Awesome quest! Thanks for doing this for the 50 year crowd!
  • richardp1968 May 5, 2012 @ 12:56 am | delete
Super lens, was an enjoyable read. I also find it quite annoying when a dog decides me and my cycle are the latest best thing to chase.

Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs, just not when I’m riding a bike.
  • wjfoster Mar 21, 2012 @ 5:34 pm | delete
Hoe are you supporting yourself in these adventures - are you self-funded via being wealthy, does squidoo and other such bring in what you need? Very interesting ... I turn 50 next year.
  • MysticTurtle Mar 22, 2012 @ 6:00 am | delete
Oh, I wish I were independently wealthy...I would be adventuring all the time! But no, I just live very simply. I don't have much, and I don't have any debt. I work and save until I have money to go. This was my very first lens, back in 2009, and Squidoo and my other online ventures are just beginning to make noticeable income...I'm hoping it will finance my next adventure.

  • CourageousLion Sep 27, 2011 @ 12:34 pm | delete
You actually did this trip with a $400 bicycle? That IS amazing! I wouldn't think of doing it without something actually designed for a trip like that. If you use Wipperman chains, you wouldn't have had to change four. And if you use Schwalbe Marathon Dureem tires, you wouldn't have had the flats and you would have only used two sets or less tires during the trip.
  • RhondaSueDavis Aug 25, 2011 @ 11:51 pm | delete
Mystic Turtle, may I use you as a character in a lens story and feature this on it? Kipsy is ready to join you on your one year biking birthday party....
  • MysticTurtle Aug 26, 2011 @ 6:58 am | delete
Sure, that would be fun. Send me a link when it's done.

A very courageous step, once we passed this stage the world does not seem to be that big. A great adventure indeed.

  • RenaissanceWoman2010 Apr 21, 2011 @ 12:25 pm | delete
Oh that we all would take life by the handlebars and go for it! I admire you for taking this epic journey and for living life on your terms. I am also a woman on the verge and I celebrate your spirit. Thanks for blazing a trail for all of us! Really enjoyed this lens. Thanks!
  • MysticTurtle Aug 26, 2011 @ 7:00 am | delete
While I love adventuring for the experiences themselves, I get the greatest satisfaction from knowing I may inspire others.

    WOW!

I have all the respect in the world for people who go off on treks and long journeys to follow their dreams. Great lens and I shall read up on your journey through your blog.

I myself did half the Pennine Way years ago. I planned on doing all of it but run out of cash.
    Dang!
  • MysticTurtle Apr 30, 2010 @ 8:28 am | delete
Sometimes the hardest part is having enough money for the adventure. The bike trip pretty much drained me, but I'm working on building the finances back up...there are other adventures to be undertaken!

Mystic, I'm enjoying your blog entries very much. Nice to see you've made it to NC. I've just completed a 2500 mile trip by auto to visit family in the midwest and northeast, but my trip was 'tame' compared to yours. I really admire what you are accomplishing.

I am so glad that your lens has been chosen as LOTD, otherwise I may not have come across it. While reading of your adventure, I am reminded that my husband and I have plans and dreams as well. I've said since I was 14 that I was going to bike across Canada for my 40th, but life has taken me away from an active lifestyle (if you an call raising 3 kids not active). In any case, I have found your lens inspirational, and wish you the best of luck in your adventure!

Congrats on being chosen for LOTD. This lens certainly deserves it -- it's fascinating. It's fantastic that you are finding a way to "follow your dream", and in such an interesting way. On your 2nd leg, up the East Coast, I imagine you are going to follow the coast line from Florida to Maine, but if you pass through SC in the upstate area (west of Greenville, near Clemson University, you are most welcome to stay overnight at my place. I'd love to meet you. Just send me an email and I'll give you directions.... Best wishes for the rest of your journey....

Oh, Wow, amazing courage and fortitude! Love this lens! Read every last inch and that doesn't happen too often. I can really identify with where you were in life approaching your 50th birthday. I'm not there yet but getting closer every day and my hubby is past his. I can imagine all the obstacles you have faced along your trip, and reading some of the places you've slept in along the way made me incredibly nervous for you for some reason. I probably wouldn't have made it past the first day, but then I'm not as avid an outdoors person as my husband is. Nevertheless, I can admire from afar those that have the courage to do what you are doing. Wish you the best of luck, and not to sound too trite and cliche' "You just go girl!" Congrats on your LOTD! 5'd, fav'd and I'm definitely a fan! :)

An amazing undertaking -- you are an awesome example for all of us who might be hitting 50 today, tomorrow, or in the near future! Congratulations for such a terrific experience and of course for LOTD! Just remarkable.

Congrats on LOTD. Challenging self is worth of a challenge.
  • purplelady Mar 13, 2009 @ 9:29 am | delete
You are one impressive woman at any age. Congratulations on your decision to celebrate your 50th in such an awesome fashion. Congratulations also on your
LOTD. Having just had my Dr. Seuss lens picked as LOTD, I can tell you how much effect it will have on your visitors and your ranking. It is indeed an honor.

I love your lens and will be checking back in to follow your bike trip and to be there for your 50th birthday. To quote Dr. Seuss: "If we didn't have birthdays, you wouldn't be you. If you'd never been born, well then what would you do?" You, my dear, would not be taking the bicycle trip of your life. Ride on!

5 bikes, some rolls of the lens and 1 fave.

Wonderful story...I always love reading about people's travels, started years back reading "A Walk Across America", thanks for sharing, and may your journey bring you home safely and gratified! What do you have planned for your 60th? :-)
Congrats on lens of the day

WOW you should be very proud of yourself, right before I turned 50 I promised myself to do a 50 mile bike ride on my 50th I did a 53 mile ride and felt great about myself. That was 12 years ago, now after reading your story I feel I should do more for my 63rd coming up in May. I have gone through major health issues lately and feel I should do something special before it's too late. You inspire me, would love to meet you when your in Florida, I live on the Gulf Coast near Saint Petersburg. Please contact me and let me know when your here. There is a bike trail from up north that goes right through Saint Petersburg its about 42 miles long and safe to ride on. Best of luck to you!

Congrats on making lens of the day :) I bike almost daily, but a trip like yours would be out of the question for me. I would not have the stamina. Inspiring though.

This is so inspiring! I would like to take a year long trip one day. Fabulous lens!

Gee, maybe Squidooers can invite you to their homes along the way. Unfortunately it looks like you went through Montana already. I'm near Yellowstone Park if you get back this way.

How did you like cycling alongside Lake Michigan? This summer I am going to ride the Kal-Haven trail with my wife and we are going to camp at the lake. It takes us from our home in Kalamazoo to South Haven on the lake, then we ride South a few miles to the State campground.

Another Kudos to you. I'm 52 and admire you for following your path.

What an amazing adventure for you. Age is just a number but it sometimes gives us a kick up the backside when there is an '0' on the end. Have fun.

Thanks! Sometimes I wish I were more like that. Then I could be happy with short trips...but that just doesn't satisfy. [in reply to MiaBellezza]

You have my greatest admiration - I'm afraid I'm more like a race horse; short spurts and then kaput~! 5*

Actually, the ride isn't done yet. I've been on "winter break" in New Mexico, and will be back on the road in a few weeks. Definitely, plan an adventure...so important to celebrate those milestone birthdays!

Hey!! How cool to find you (well, I guess you found ME first) on here! What a neat surprise! And THIS is awesome. I'm lensrolling, favoriting, becoming a fan, and all that good stuff. I had no idea you'd done this (the year-long ride). How great! I'm about to turn 40, myself, and I really should plan some birthday adventure for myself. This is definitely inspiring.
