What We See In Motorcycle Leather Jackets

Not until the late 1920's did motorcycling enthusiasts get a leather biker jacket they could call their own. It wasn't until the Schott Bros. garment manufacturer created the double sticthed men's leather motorcycle jacket before bikers had something other that surplus military aviator and tanker crew jackets to wear for protection against nasty spills.

leather biker jackets for menIn the early 1950's, the men who wore leather biker jackets began to carry the stigma of being the bad boys, and the women began to swoon over those boys and their edgy lifestyle. Marlon Brando as Johnny Strabler in The Wild One accentuated that vision of general living hard and loving right that women find appealing in a motorcycle leather jacket worn by the right man.

I own three leather biker jackets myself; all different styles, all for different weather, and all three give me a boost of confidence when I wear them. Perhaps I feel the ghosts of bad boys from the past, or maybe I know that my jackets are an automatic plus in the favor category when women look at me.

Alas, I know the confidence comes from having the comfort and protection a quality leather motorcycle jacket on my back.

One can always dream though.

My Leather Biker Jackets

Making Good Choices

Not too long ago, on one of those rare days it was over 80 deg. here this summer, a riding buddy asked me, "Dude, aren't you hot as hell in that jacket?" I was wearing the leather jacket I have on the intro picture.

"Nope. Okay, only if we stop for very long. Otherwise, it's almost as if I have air conditioning in this thing."

motorcycle leather jacketI wasn't lying either, because I had the Thinsulate liner out, the four air vents unzipped, and my sleeves "open". The air was flowing into the jacket through the sleeves, up my arms and out the back. That jacket is always cooler on hot days than not having one on.

Protection from the elements is no problem either. Last year, I rode in a poker run on a crisp fall day that the temperature didn't make it far past the 40 deg. mark. The jacket, aided by the liner and a sweatshirt, kept me warm for the whole ride.

The number of bugs that die on the front of my jacket is another testament for wearing one while riding, and then there is the threat of the potential fall and slide along the pavement. There's 2mm of cowhide to scrape through before the asphalt begins its assault on my skin. Heaven forbid I should ever need my leather jacket for that.

Choosing The Right Material
When it comes to choosing a particular kind of leather for a garment, the options can seem mind boggling. It seems that anything we can wrestle to the ground (or bring to the shore), we'll make leather out of. Lamb, Kangaroo, Stingray, are just a few, but the best for biker gear is cowhide.

Cowhide has a strength and durability that is unparalleled. 'Top' grain leather, leather that has been sanded and lacquered to remove any imperfections, can be 1.3mm thick and provide protection. But, the best protection against the elements and road rash is 'Naked' cowhide. Naked cowhide is treated by just removing the hair and applying dyes. This process allows the final product to be at least 2mm thick.

So, if you are truly seeking a good biker jacket, make sure it's cowhide, and remember that most styles are available in 'Naked' leather.

Insuring The Kit!
What a great idea. An insurance company now covers a rider's helmet and leathers(biker jacket, gloves, leather chaps, boots,etc.). Bikersure, an insurance company based in the United Kingdom is now offering coverage up to $700 on helmets and leathers under the premise that these items are part of the safety kit.

"We recognise that good quality helmet and leathers are an essential part of a motorcyclist's safety kit. We want to make it affordable for bikers to ride safely. Our Helmet and Leather policy makes it possible for them to easily replace damaged kit after an accident."

For the cost of $20 a year, motorcyclists can obtain coverage on the kit. The insurance company also recommends that riders should invest 15% to 20% of the cost of the motorcycle into a proper and high quality kit.

Leathered Up Men

Do They Make You Lather Up?

Men in leather biker jackets have always been looked at as the bad boys that girls love to fantasize about. Well, okay not most of us men in leather jackets. A lot of us wear our jackets too short and could use a tube of plumber's crack caulking. But, still there are those of us who drive women Ga-Ga.

Do any names come to mind when you get all lathered up about a man in a biker jacket? Oh, that was directed towards the women.

Guys, what man in a biker jacket do you relate closest too?
