Bicycles For Children is Good Outdoors Fun

Many children in this country are overweight and lead a sedantary lifestyle. Bicycle riding can be a way for boys and girls to get away from the video game and TV watching lifestyle.
Bike riding is also a good way for children to utilize basic social skills with other children. Many of the social skills that playing video games and TV cannot possibly provide.
Getting together with the family and going for bike rides is also a good way to spend quality time with your children. When we were children we used to do this with my father and my mother, and we always enjoyed it.
Remember to visit my The Total Bike Shop for a great selection of Boys and girls, Mountain, Racing bikes and accessories.

Why Should Everybody, especially Children wear Helmets

Helmets Prevent thousands of Head Injuries every year

Every year more than 400,000 children under the age of 15 are treated in hospital emergency rooms for bicycle-related injuries. An additional 300 children are killed. Bicyclists ages 5 through 14 have among the highest injury rates of all riders. There are approximately one-third of all injuries and two-thirds of child bicycle deaths are head injuries. So, it is imperative that everybody, and especially children should wear helmets!. Check out more helmets over at The Total Bike Shop for some more helmets.

Safety on Bicycles. Make Sure They Know the Rules

Rather Safe than Sorry.

Safety comes first. Take your children out and teach them the rules of the road.
Get a bike safety flag for each of your children. These are important because drivers are in larger vehicles, SUV, caravans, pick-up trucks, etc, and they may not see your child until it is too late. Drivers also have more distractions with cell phones, arguing with children, even the gsp can distract them, etc. With the safety flag, it will draw attention to your child on the bike.
You should check and see if they can ride on the sidewalk, many cities prohibit bikes on sidewalks, it will be safer if they can ride on the sidewalks.
They should dismount and look both ways before crossing the street. I still do this, as I do not trust drivers.
Teach them proper hand signals. Use the left arm to signal. When the left arm is straight out, it means that you are making a left hand turn. If you bend the arm at the elbow, it means that you are about to turn right. And when you bend your elbow with the hand down and palm pointed behind you, you are slowing down.
Your child should learn to ride in single file. If they ride side by side, the one closest to traffic is putting their safety in jeopardy.
Make sure that they wear a helmet!

I Have Purchased a Cheap Department Store Bike Now What?

For most children this is Ok, but for some of the more adventurous Pre-teens this may be a mistake.

If you are going to purchase a department store bike GET SOME ONE TO CHECK TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE PARTS ARE TIGHT! If you know enough about bikes, then do it yourself, but if you don't find someone who does. Most department stores have people who put as many bikes together that they can, so parts may not be tight as they should be. You have to make sure that the wheels are true. The brakes have to be tight. You even have to make sure that the pedals are on properly. If you can make sure that everything is on tight and proper, it should last most children a good amount of time.
Pre-teens are another problem. For some reason they think that bikes can handle the abuse of hitting the curb with the wheels when they do their "stunt riding". Even an expensive bike will eventually start to break down. You will have to explain to them that bikes were not made for this type of riding.
Make them some wooden ramps, or even a dirt ramp. Maybe some parents can get together and do something in a vacant lot. But no bike can withstand the wheels continually hitting the asphalt curbs. I have seen so many bikes destroyed with these "curbside stunts".
Try to explain to your pre-teen or even teen that bikes were not made for this type of riding. Or even take them out to the woods and get them to ride. Believe me they will not build up the same kind of speed in the woods, as they will on the roads.

Training Wheels for the New Rider?

You Bet!

Training wheels are great for building confidence in a child as they get used to riding the bike. I remember when my father would try and stabilize me while I was learning to ride. While I enjoyed the company of my father most of the time, these bike riding sessions put a strain on our father/son relationship. I have since helped other children learn to ride bicycles, and believe me training wheels were good for me and the child. I believe that it made them, for the most part, able to ride their bikes independently. Get training wheels for the mental wellbeing of yourself and the children.
