Great lens, very informative tips for beginners. I do a lot of running and weight lifting but I haven't tried Bikram Yoga yet. It's very important to stay hydrated. Most studios would benefit from offering a water dispenser and very pure water in 5 gallon glass bottles. Then the whole class has access to pure water and can readily refill their individual bottles. Glass bottles are also 100% BPA-free.

Emily: the exact thing happened to me today (I did an 8am class too)! I was in bed with a migraine (5 hrs after the class), freezing cold.
Feeling better now, but very odd.

i just returned to bikram yoga after four years without it. i have no real issues getting through class despite the heat and i'm doing the poses just fine, as i've been consistently practicing other forms of yoga for many years. what is strange, about an hour after class (the last two times now), i become freezing, bedridden and have a horrible headache. today, i did bikram from 8a - 9.30a, drank tons of water before and after (some with EmergenC) and have been freezing in bed, barely able to move since 11a and its been two hours. it is about 80 degrees outside, but i am huddled under blankets with the space heater on, and can hardly move. i thought i was in great health, but this just seems like an abnormal response. any thoughts?

I have been practicing Bikram now for 2 months, about 4 times a week. In the last week I practiced 4 days in a row and did some other cardio in the same week and my joints are really aching. (especially my ankles, knees, fingers, and this has gone on for over 5 days now.) I also seem to be extremely tired lately. I am trying to drink more and more fluids but I am thinking I could be somewhat dehydrated. I purchased some joint vitamins today and will begin taking those first thing tomorrow. I also took some electrolyte pills today as well. Do I need to press on, or maybe give my body some rest? I have become so addicted to Bikram that I hate to even miss, but at the same time, I do not want to injure myself either. Thanks so much for any information you can give me.

Your "Things to remember" is a great reminder for anyone doing any Yoga at all. I don't do Bikram but I'm tempted to try. A friend of mine absolutely loves it! I enjoyed the lens.

Fantastic lens. I began Bikram yoga a few months ago. What i really enjoy about it is that every session is different.

Great tip about returning. I have been trying to get back into the practice after a 3-month break and am so disappointed to find me so out of shape! I *breezed* through my first class.

The first time I tried Bikram Yoga I hated it. Once you get past the first initial horrible experience you will grow to love it. The second time the heat did not bother me as much. It gets a little easier each time. The thing that I like the most is it increases your endurance and stamina for other exercises.

I have been doing Bikram and love it now that I am through those initial problems but yes they do return if I miss weeks of class. Overall it is the best thing I have ever done for myself so if you try it, take your time, know the pain will ease or go away and the benefits far out weigh the down side.

Thanks for such an excellent summary.

I am currently living in South Korea and am taking a hot yoga class three times a week. I am here teaching English and can't speak Korean. I am having extreme headaches after class. I am drinking more than enough water, should I be taking any supplements to balance my sodium? I heard that because of all of the sweating and heat I may need to take them...

I have been practicing 2x a week for 6 months (my work schedule only permits 2x) 90% of the time I so tired and weak the rest of day, i don't even have the energy to do household chores. Is there anthing i can do to level out this situation?

I practice Yoga for about 2 years but went for the first time about a month ago to bikram yoga. It felt great and I did not have any symptoms during class, however the next day I felt tired and had flu like symptoms including a sore throat. I did not relate it to the bikram class at the time but yesterday I did go back to a second class of bikram and again today, I have a terrible sore throat :(
Did anybody experience simular symptoms? or is it just a coincidence....

Thanks. I haven't done yoga for quite some time, but have recently started doing aikido, and have experienced many of the side effects you mentioned. Now I know why my leg would embarrassingly start to spasm half-way through class...

This is really interesting. I've never been able to do yoga due to lower back injuries but I can certainly see the benefits of this. Food for thought.
