Bilbo Baggins
Bilbo Baggins of the Shire is a remarkable hobbit, though few would have guessed his potential. He was a well-to-do, comfortable bachelor of fifty when he somehow found himself roped into an adventure that would involve a wizard, dwarves, elves, trolls, goblins, giant spiders, and a dragon.
A company of thirteen dwarves were setting off to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and its riches from the evil dragon Smaug. Gandalf the wizard tricks Bilbo into hosting a party for the dwarves, then convinces the dwarves to take Bilbo along on the adventure as their "burglar." Bilbo agrees to go, perhaps motivated by his adventurous "Tookish" side. The comfort-loving, timid hobbit slowly becomes an unlikely hero who uses his own wits to rescue the dwarves time and time again. By chance he also picks up a magic ring of invisibility, which would come in handy when he needed to hide from enemies and annoying relatives.
After the dragon was defeated and the dwarves moved back into the Lonely Mountain, Bilbo returned home with bags of gold. Although the adventure cost him his reputation with friends and relations, he lived in Bag End quite comfortably for the next 60 years.
Around his 111 birthday, Bilbo feels restless and decides it's time to leave the Shire for good. After much pressuring from Gandalf, he leaves his magic ring to his adopted heir, Frodo. The magic ring turns out to be the evil Ring of Power forged by the Dark Lord Sauron, and Bilbo became the first person in history to give it up voluntarily.
The Ring had given Bilbo an unnaturally long life, but after he parted with it, his age began catching up with him. Bilbo was unable to go further than Rivendell, where he enjoyed the good food and music of the elves. He also worked on his memoirs, There and Back Again, also more commonly known as The Hobbit.
After the destruction of the One Ring, Bilbo sailed away to the Grey Havens with Frodo, Gandalf, Galadriel, and Elrond. He was a very respectable 131 years old, a record age for a hobbit in Middle Earth.

Three reasons to Love Bilbo Baggins
- He's a good storyteller. Not only can he tell you stories about his own grand adventure, he can also share many tales and songs about Middle Earth in general.
- He's generous. Instead of chasing out all the dwarves that beset his peaceful hobbit hole, he fed them and waited on them. He treated his gardeners well and even gave magical toys to the children who attended his 111 birthday party.
- He appreciates a simple life. He prizes a cozy home filled with warmth and good food--simple but reassuring things that are worth more than glory and jewels.

I'm old, Gandalf. I know I don't look it, but I'm beginning to feel it in my heart. I feel, thin. Sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread. I need a holiday. A very long holiday. And I don't expect I shall return. In fact I mean not to.

It's a dangerous business, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no telling where you might be swept off to.

I'm very selfish, you know. Yes, I am. Very selfish. I don't know why I took you in after your mother and father died, but it wasn't out of charity. I think it was because, of all my numerous relations, you were the one that showed real spirit.

I am sorry I brought this upon you, my boy. I'm sorry that... you must carry this burden. I'm sorry for everything.

- I love the Bilbo quotes. Though I think there would be a few great ones in The Hobbit as well :)
