Bill Buckner ruined my childhood

I was 12 years old in 1986 when my childhood came to a abrupt halt. My parents were on the brink of divorce. (Yawn. Whose parents weren't?) I saw my seventh grade crush and first love, Jessica, pick her nose and eat it. (I knew she was too good to be true.) And on October 25th, Bill Buckner had a slow ground ball slip through his legs, ending my hopes of seeing the Red Sox win the World Series.

Top 5 reasons Bill Buckner shouldn't have been in the game

  1. His mustache was so bushy, there is no way it didn't block his vision while fielding.
  2. This guy's knees and ankles were so bad, he looked like an arthritic flamingo when he walked.
  3. The Red Sox had a great defensive first baseman, Dave Stapleton, wasting away on the bench.
  4. Buckner was already 0 for 5 batting on the day.
  5. He was obviously hungover from drinking too many Appletinis the night before.

I'm all serious looking like I had something to do with winning it.

1986 World Series

The 1986 World Series pitted the New York Mets against the Boston Red Sox. It was cited in the legend of the "Curse of the Bambino" to explain the error by Bill Buckner in Game 6 that allowed the Mets to extend the series to a 7th game. The NL champion Mets eventually beat the AL champion Red Sox, 4 games to 3.

I want to stick a fork in my eye when I see these.

Don't just take my word for it.

"For many Sox fans, Game 6 changed the way we looked at sports -- the pain was too intense, too impossible, too dramatic, too overwhelming -- and that feeling of devastation seemed much more consuming than the flip side (being on the winning side). The sacrifices were too great. Before '86, we feared the worst. After '86, we expected the worst. There's a difference. And yet That Game links together every Red Sox fan; it's the one thing we collectively share that nobody else can comprehend. I'm telling you, you couldn't possibly understand it. We're linked together by That Game, all of us. Inexorably. And every Red Sox fan reading this knows what I mean."

Billy Bucks was and always will be a beloved Chicago Cub. By the way, how did that Babe Ruth trade work for the beans?

I saw that game as well. Disheartening at first but these things do pass. Great lens.
