Organize Your Bills With A Bill Paying Notebook
Are your bills scattered all over the house? Where's your checkbook?
Do you know the balance of your savings and checking accounts? What payments are outstanding?
Are you trying to get out of debt? What are your monthly bills and how much are they? What are the totals?
These are just a few of the questions my Bill Paying Notebook helped me answer as I organized our money life.
If you want to organize your financial flurries and worries, try putting together a bill paying notebook. It can be as simple or as elaborate as you want it to be. Let's look at what a Bill Paying Notebook is and what should go in it.

What's A Bill Paying Notebook?
...and why do I need one?

If you don't know the answers to some of the questions in the Introduction, a Bill Paying Notebook may be a good tool for you.
If you want a central place to keep all your bills, statements, receipts, balances, etc, a Bill Paying Notebook may be a good tool for you.
Basically, a Bill Paying Notebook is as simple as a 3 ring binder containing your bank statements, sections for your bills, a calendar or other tracking for when bills are due, perhaps a pouch for stamps and envelopes and You! That's it!
My earliest bill paying 'notebook' was a stenographer pad, pen, and a rubber band to hold everything together.
Bill Paying Reminder and Filing System
Stop worrying about delinquent bill payments and late payment penalties. This updated Bill Paying Reminder was designed to help you keep up with the status of each of your accounts. The system has see through pockets for filing and easy access to bills, checkbooks, credit cards, stamps, envelopes, and labels.

What Do You Keep In A Bill Paying Binder?
Are There Rules For Organizing My Bills?

No hard and fast rules here, but here are some suggestions:
*your bank statements
*receipts for your paid bills
*savings, retirement, IRA, and other investment type statements
*your monthly bill statements
*a budget (**gasp**)
When you sort your mail, separate your pending bills from all of your other mail. When you're done sorting, file your pending bills in a bill paying notebook. Don't put your utility bill in one folder, your car insurance bill in another folder and your phone bill in another. All of your pending bills should be filed together so they can be paid without having to search everywhere to find them.
Starting Your Bill Paying Notebook
Supplies I Recommend For A Personal Finance Notebook

*A 3 ring binder; I like the kind with the clear vinyl pockets on the front and spine so I can label it and/or add artwork.
*Dividers; You can use regular tabbed dividers or the pocket dividers
*A pouch, preferably clear, for a calculator, stamps, envelopes, pens, pencils, highlighters, Post-It Notes, etc.
*A calendar, if you like. This calendar could be used for marking bill due dates if you like visual reminders.
*Sheet protectors.
That's It!
Always pay your bills in the same place, whether that's your desk, the kitchen table, etc. Wherever you choose, keep it equipped with your bill paying notebook, your checkbook, envelopes, stamps, pens, pencils, a calculator, tape, a stapler and return address labels.

As soon as you pay a bill, write down the payment in your check register. If you put this off, there's a good chance you'll forget. Once you pay your bills, write on your copy of the invoice the Date Paid, Check Number and Amount Paid. Then, file each paid bill stub into the appropriate pocket of your bill paying notebook with one pocket for each month or each category (phone, utilities, insurance, etc).

Set aside 2 - 4 consistent days per month for paying bills. Do all of your bill paying on those days. Maybe it can be the 1st and the 15th or maybe it should be every Saturday (if you get paid on Friday). This way, you don't have to drop everything every time you receive a bill in the mail.

- I have always kept bills due and paid in one place for filing in archives later. I also once used a bill planner schedule/diary that really helped to plan for when utilities and other bills were coming up. Great lens!

- These are the BEST for organizing bill and keeping track of bill paying! One place for all the bills and you always know where to find them and the receipts-or confirmation # when they are paid. When I first started using these I couldn't believe how much stress of paying bills was simply to make sure I didn't lose one. This method of organizing your bills is the BEST you can find to take away a lot of the stress of bills. Now you can see them all in one place and always know if you have any left to pay this month. Thanks for all the research you've done to get this resource handy. You are going to save us all a lot of time and money.
