Billy Fury, One Of The Great British Pop Stars Of The Pre-Beatles Era
Billy Fury was a wonderfully evocative singer and a wonderful person. Because of his looks and sultry voice he was, in the early part of his career, compared favourably with Elvis Presley, as the UK's answer to Elvis Presley. Although if I were to be honest, he was one among many who were given this accolade in the late 50's and early 60's.
He unfortunately he passed away in 2003, having suffered from a heart problem for most of his life, after suffering from rheumatic fever at the age of 7. Thus cutting short a re-invigorated career, and depriving his fans of, I am sure, many more wonderful recordings. He was one of the first and greatest British rockers - only the Beatles, Elvis and Cliff scored more hits in the Sixties - yet he never had a No 1:
In this lens I will try to tell a little of the story of this quiet and shy man and bring a little of his music to a wider audience

The First Billy Fury Album
Groundbreaking And Riveting
The first Billy Fury Album I aquired: The Album pictured here, called simply, "Billy Fury", was released on the Decca label also in1960. It was one of a series of inexpensive LP's under the collective label called Ace Of Clubs. Being at school it was perfect for me. It was my third long playing record after Elvis's Golden Records and Cliff, a live album recorded in font of an audience. However, it became my favourite and set the scene for the sixties for me. I think my favourite track was, "Wondrous Place", which is one of the You Tube videos below.

Singles And Tracks From His Films
As a start to the story, why not listen to one or two ( or maybe even more because you may well get hooked) of his songs. The earliest were all self-penned at a time ( pre-beatles) when this was unheard of and some of the videos are a little grainy and the sound quality is not too good. But luckily there are a few on You Tube of a short, later phase of his carreer. It is mostly from these that I have selected the videos here.

The Billy Fury Story
As Told By These Web-Sites
- Billy Fury - The Story
- Billy Fury, a man who from the late 1950s, brought a great deal of excitement into many lives. Beneath the show biz glamour, he was a shy, gentle man who trusted people, loved nature and won the respect and affection of everyone whose lives he touched. That influence remains today, as Billy's fans are the nicest people you could wish to meet.
Although his management and commercial pressures led him to become known to the public as a balladeer, Billy Fury was Britain's number 1 rock and roller.
This site is a comprehensive and very detailed look at the man, his life and career. - Billy Fury On Wikipedia
- Billy Fury, born Ronald William Wycherley (17 April 1940 - 28 January 1983), was an internationally successful English pop singer from the late 1950s to the early 1960s, and remained an active songwriter until the 1980s.

It's been over thirteen years since Billy's backing group, the Tornados, donned the suits once more, tuned up their instruments and stepped back out onto the stage to perform the songs that have bought so much pleasure to so many fans across the years. They are, of course, the songs of Billy Fury. An icon of British pop, Billy was a true Rock 'N' Roller. During the 60's he sold more singles for Decca than the Rolling Stones, and amazingly scored more hit 45's in the 60s than the Beatles! - The Story Of Billy Fury - The Museum Of Liverpool
- His first album, 'The Sound of Fury' featuring 10 songs all written by Billy, was ground breaking for its time. He was one of the few artists before the Beatles era to write and record his own songs. DJ John Peel called it "the only authentic British Rock and Roll album around, at that time."
The Beatles even auditioned to be his backing group. But it was never to be. John Lennon famously asked for his autograph. - Interview 1973, from BBC Archives
- Billy Fury was one of the most successful acts belonging to showbiz impresario Larry Parnes in the 1960s. Though his early success may have been eclipsed in later years by the Liverpool bands that followed him, his clear voice and innate modesty ensured he remained one of Britain's best-loved rock singers. This is the raw, unedited recording of an interview for a documentary. The recording, which also includes halting prompts and suggestions from the director, has not been broadcast in its entirety before.
