What's Bindery Equipment in the Printing Industry Used For?

Bindery equipment and bindery systems are used to take guts of a magazine or book and hold them together. With high volume printing, sections of 8 or more pages are folded and placed onto a pocket feeder. Utilizing multiple pockets of 8 or more pages the pocket feeder 'stacks' the sections so the sections can be bound together. Once the pages are bound, the product is trimmed so each page is the same height and width.

Two Most Popular Bindery Types

The two most common forms of bindery are perfect binding and saddle stitching. Perfect bindery uses glue along the spine of the product to hold the cover and pages together. Perfect binding is commonly used on thicker magazines and most books. Saddle stitched magazines have staples down the spine. A stapled spine is usually a stronger method of bindery, especially for thinner applications. A glued spine tends to experience wear and cracks over time, this can lead to pages or even the cover falling off the product. However, most magazine publishers prefer the look of a perfect bound magazine.

Swiss Bindery

Swiss bindery is an adaptation of a perfect bound product. The major difference is how cover is attached to the guts of the product. Using an advanced taping and gluing system, the cover is somewhat detached from the first inside page of the product. This unique covering technique allows the inside pages of the book to fall flat when opened.
