A guide to Binoculars
Binoculars, manytimes refered to as field glasses, are used in everyday life to give the user a close-up view of some remote object or activity. Whilst telescopes often have greater magnification, a set of binoculars gives the owner of a three dimensional view of the target and deliver a superior image.
This lens aims to provide you with an overview of the types of binoculars available and what you should look for when selecting your next binoculars.
Magnification and Clarity
The magnification factor is the first number quoted. For example 7 would be the magnification of the first example above and the set of binoculars would produce an image as if the user were seven times closer to the subject.
The second number measures the diameter of the objective lens. This is an indication of how much light can enter lens and larger numbers deliver a clearer image.

The main uses for Binoculars
bird watching - closer observation of timid birds in your garden can be achieved with a relatively inexpensive set of binoculars. A 6 to 8 times magnification is all that is required. Going out in the wider world to observe rare species requires a greater magnification capability so that you can observe the subject from further away without being noticed.
Astronomy - whilst telescopes are most commonly used for observations of the night sky a set of binoculars with say 10 times magnification are often used by amateur astronomers as a first step.
Military - and the military make a significant use of binoculars. Common uses, other than observing enemy movements, include range finding for gun batteries. Military binoculars often have enhancements, such as infra red capability, or are modified to withstand extreme environments.
Image stabilised and digital binoculars
To overcome this problem some binoculars have an image stabilisation feature. This employs technology developed for video cameras and uses electronics to create a very still image in the eye piece. A more simple, low-budget solution, is to employ a tripod.
Digital binoculars - binoculars produce a close-up, clear view of the subject,it is natural that at times the user wants to capture this image for posterity. This has led to the combination of digital cameras with binoculars.
