Born: February 1, 1902 Joplin, Missouri into an abolitionist family
Died: May 22, 1967 of cancer Harlem, New York

Poet, writer, playwright

His residence at 20 East 127th Street in Harlem, New York has been given landmark status by the New York City Preservation Commission

His block of East 127th Street was renamed "Langston Hughes Place"

In the audio book "Voices of Black America" you can hear original recordings from 1908-1947, also with Langston Hughes

 

Biography Langston Hughes 

1921: Publishes his first poem "The Negro Speaks of Rivers"
1921: Attended Columbia University. Left after on year
922/1925 : Worked on a freighter. Traveled to Africa, lived in Paris and Rome. Did lots of different jobs
1925/1929: Attended Lincoln University, Pennsilvania.Received his BA degree in 1929
1926: "The Weary Blues" (book of poems)launched his career as writer
1926: Wrote an essay "The Negro Artist and the Radical Mountain"
1935: Awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship
1940: Awarded a Rosenwald Fellowship
1943: Awarded an honorary Litt.D by his alma mater
1947: Provided the lyrics for the musical Street Scene
1949: Wrote a play which inspired the opera Troubled Island
1960: Returned to the stage
1961: Black gospel musical "Black Nativity"

In his later years, Hughes completed a two-volume autobiography; edited anthologies and pictorial volumes
