Edgar Allan Poe Biography

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), the father of modern mystery.

Edgar Poe was born on 19 January 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. He died on 7 October 1849 in Baltimore, Maryland. He is burried in an unmarked grave in the Old Westminster Burying Ground of Baltimore, Maryland.

Father : David Poe (1784 - 1810)
Mother : Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins (1787-1811)

Siblings: Brother William Henry (1807-1831), sister Rosalie (1811-1874)

After the death of his parents Edgar was taken in by Frances (d.1829) and
John Allan (d.1834), a wealthy merchant in Richmond, Virginia.

Edgar Allan Poe - Timeline 

1815: Traveled to England. Attended school in Chelsea.

1820: Back to Richmond. Attended the University of Virginia (Studied Latin and poetry). He had lots of gambling debts. Couldn't pay them. Left school and enrolled in the US Army. Served for two years.

1827: His poem "Dreams" appeared in the Baltimore North American. The same year "Tamerlane and Others
Poems" (his first book) was published at his own expenses.

1829: Enlisted in the West Point Military Academy. Was dismissed a year later.

1829: His second book was published (Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems).

1831: When "Poems" was published, he moved to Baltimore (lived with his aunt Maria Clemn). Poe fell in love with his 13-year-old cousin Virginia.

1833: His poems were published in the Baltimore Saturday Visiter. Won a contest in it for his story "MS found in a Bottle".

1835: Became editor and contributor of the Southern Literary Messenger. Was the start of his career as critic and essayist.

1836: Married Virginia Clemn in Richmond. Moved to New York City. Poe's only completed.

1838: "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym" was published.

1839-1840 and 1841-1842 : He contributed to other publications such as: Burton's Gentleman's Magazine (1839-1840), Graham's Magazine (1841-1842), Evening Mirror, and Godey's Lady's Book.

1840: His contributions to magazines were published as a collection in "Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque". Included : "The Duc de L'Omelette", "Bon-Bon" and "King Pest".

1841: "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" was published. Was considered like the first detective story.

1845: "The Raven and Other Poems"(poetry collection) gained him attention at home and abroad. Included "The Raven", Eulalie" and "To Helen".

1846: Continued to write poetry, critical essays, short stories (Ulalume, Eureka, The Cask of Amontillado).

1847, February : His wife died of consumption. Poe was devastated by her death. He wrote "Deep in earth my love is lying and I must weep alone."

During the years following Virginia's death, Poe's life was taking a steady turn downward. His attempt to resurrect his failing career after a long bout with alcoholism and depression was unseccessful

1849, October, 7: Poe died at the age of 40 in Baltimore, It is still not clear how he died. But it is said that his death can be attributed to the effects of alcoholism. At the time, a contemporary of Poe's remarked : ""This death was almost a suicide, a suicide prepared for a long time."

1875: Poe's remains were reinterred with his aunt Maria Clemn. (Poe Memorial Grave in the cemetery's corner at Fayette and Greene Stretts.

It is also said : "Although he lived a short and tragic life, Edgar Allan Poe remains today one of the most-beloved mystery writers in history. His contributions to literature and the mystery genre cannot be underestimated".
