Dos and Don'ts of Bird Feeding (Today's List)
-
DO... The birds need to know that you have something to offer. The best time to offer a new feeder is during the summer months.
DO... Birds seem to like protection, so try to provide them with a few bushes in your backyard. At the moment, I'm looking at our neighbours back yard. He has his feeders next to his back porch and next to the porch are some little evergreen bushes. This gives his birds lots of places to land.
Don't... throw out orange halves. Add string for hanging and then fill with seed, raisins, whatever you have on hand and hang from a tree.
DO... keep your eyes open for cats. They love to "play" with birds but not in a good way. If you have a bird feeder in your backyard, chances are that the neighborhood cat knows about it too!
The Perfect Bird Feeder... In My Opinion

I have never actually tried to build a bird feeder my self, but I'm sure that there are some kids out there who would love to do something like this. Give my daughter some wood and some nails, and she would always come up with something unique. Once it was a guitar of her own and the other time, a pool table comes to mind. She was probably about 8 years old. The items looked as if an 8 year old built them, but she came up with the entire idea and directions herself!
And come to think of it, this could make for a nice pastime for the cold winter months!

What My Birds Won't Eat
Believe it or not, the only thing that my birds haven't developed a taste for are bananas! They will eat pretty much everything else I put out!

Bird Feeder List of What You Need to Know
- Keeping the Feeder Clean
- With a little help from you, the kids will probably be able to take care of most of the cleaning or at least know that it's important!
- Keeping the Seed Fresh
- I never thought of this before but it does make sense. I've seen stale birdseed and it's not pretty! That's why having the perfect bird feeder is so important!

I have always used a bag and spill a lot of it. This makes a lot more sense.
A Chinese Proverb
A bird does not sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song.
Stop by and say hello
I hope that you take a few minutes to tell us about the birds at your feeders!

- I always keep birdseed on hand for cold winter months, and usually just spread out on a balcony. After reading your great lens, I am motivated to do a birdfeeder as a project with my grandkids. 5*s

- My parents put out a plate of food on bird bath (on a balcony so that cats can't get to it). It is positioned next to a big window so it is lovely watching the birds from inside.

- I love feed the birds, and wanted to mention that the Baltimore Orioles love the oranges. We seem to have quite a few around here, we see them mostly in the springtime when they are nesting and rearing their young. I will lensroll this into a bird lens I did some time ago. Nicely done! ~claudia

- Don't know if we have any Orioles here. Just moved to a new home/country and I have spotted one Cardinal and a few sparrows. Hoping to attract lots more before the winter is over. :)
