Bird Unit Study

Ranked #3,353 in Education, #80,212 overall

A bird unit study is a good way to study birds with your children or classroom. A unit study has a central theme and incorporates the other subjects around that theme. With a bird unit study, you can incorporate science, history, geography, art, and more. Birds are a fascinating subject to many children and they will peak their interest to really dig in and learn about them. I got interested in birds because of my little guy. He is doing bird watching in 4-H and figured it was a good time to learn more about this interesting creature.

Bird Math

Select a time of the day, each day to do a bird count. Compare the difference in amount of birds from day to day. Where there more one day than another, was there less?

Select a period of time, say 30 minutes, and make a graph of which birds visited your yard/ or school ground. To make it more interesting, add a bird feeder to your yard/ school ground and watch it and make a graph of the birds that visit.

You can use this blank bar graph to graph which birds you see in your yard.

Bird Geography

Bird Science

Two good activities for studying birds are a bird lapbook or making an interactive notebook about birds.

You can set an interactive notebook about birds by putting a different bird on each page. You could add a picture of the bird and then add mini books about what they eat, where they live, where they migrate, what their eggs look like, what type of nest they have, what size they are, ect.

THE HOMESCHOOL CLUB is real parents and kids sharing their best resources for great homeschooling. Each day we celebrate learning by opening doors to a world of creativity, knowledge and discovery. In the car, at the kitchen sink, and down by the frog pond - the whole world is our classroom and we explore it with creative projects, games, and activities. This club is a place to share, organize, and discuss how and what we learn in the world. Make a free page to tell your own homeschooling story and share your favorite resources. We can't wait to hear from you!
