Bird Feeder Visitors

Two bird feeders sit just outside our front window. We enjoy watching the different bird species that come to sample our bird seed. Here's where we sit to watch the avian visitors.
We keep bird identification books handy because it's more fun when you know the name of your visitors. In June 2011 we have cardinals, finches, woodpeckers, titmouse, and blue jays.

Our Bird Feeder Visitors

These two bird feeders have been here for three years. Some bird species like doves and cardinals are here all year long. Others just stop by during a migration away from the northern cold winter weather. They are the true "snowbirds" that visit Florida.

It has surprised us that there are also different birds that seem to appear at the feeders only once. At least, they have only been observed once. You have to be quick because sometimes they dart in for only one quick beakfull and then are gone.

Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders

We use two types of bird feeders that prevent squirrels from stealing the bird seed. One feeder has a plastic umbrella type top and the other is metal and has an adjustable spring on the perch set to close the feed door when a heavy animal lands on the perch.

As you can see, we have both feeders installed in our yard. The squirrels still try to get at the seed, but, quit when they fail. The birds feel safe while eating.

For the first time yesterday, a squirrel figured out how to get at the seed in the plastic feeder. So my husband chased it away with a spray of water from the garden hose. Unfortunately, the squirrel returned today. Hubby sprayed the pole with WD 10-40 and scared the squirrel away with water from the hose again.

Nighttime Bird Feeder Visitor

One morning we woke to find both our feeders knocked to the ground and empty. Squirrels couldn't have done it. A bob cat has been seen at times in the neighborhood, but, we didn't think he would bother bird seed.

So, at dusk I set up a post by the front window and waited with camera in hand. This is the culprit. My husband chased him away with the garden hose, but he came back twice more. This raccoon was really determined to get at the bird seed. We had to take the seed containers off the poles each night for a week to stop the raccoon. That seemed to do the trick because we have not seen him in over two months.

It is now July 2011 and we still have not been visited again by the raccoon.

Woodpecker Visits

One of three woodpeckers who visit regularly.

woodpecker

It's funny to watch the woodpeckers feed from the bird feeders. They hang upside down. They seem to search for a peanut and then fly up to a nearby tree and fit the nut into the bark. We had never seen a bird hide food before.
When the feeder is empty, the woodpecker flies to a drain pipe and pecks on it to make noise and tell us the feeder needs seeds.

Our exact model of bird feeder is no longer for sale. This bird feeder is the most like ours. If we need to replace ours, this is what we would buy. Under some circumstances, squirrels can still get at the seed. But, this is the closest to squirrel proof.

Amazon Customer Review
"5.0 out of 5 stars Truly squirrel-proof!, April 11, 2005
By Texas bird lover
I own four of these; I am buying four more to use in the country. I've given eight of them as gifts. Simply put, THEY WORK. The squirrels have to go through such contortions to get to the food that they really are not a big problem anymore. You do have to take care in your placement, or the squirrels will hang onto a nearby fence or branch and feast away, but once placed properly, you'll frustrate them! "

Smart Squirrel Finds the Seeds

We thought this feeder was squirrel proof too, but, look what happened. Hubby sprayed the metal rod with oil and the squirrel slid down. That happened 7 times as I watched. The squirrel rubbed the oil off with his body fur and got higher each time.

When we watch birds at our feeders, sometimes, they behave just like humans. What does this blue jay picture say to you?

Sandhill Cranes at our Bird Feeder

While working away at my computer on the table in my kitchen window, I looked up to see this Sandhill Crane family. I ran to get the flip mino camcorder hoping to make a video. What fun when one of the adult cranes put its beak right into the hole in the bird feeder for seed.

Cardinal Male Feeds Female.

Northern Cardinals mate for life and stay together all year. The male Cardinal often feeds the female as part of their mating behavior. They eat seeds, fruits, blossoms, and buds, insects, worms, spiders and slugs. We always have Sunflower seeds that are among their favorites in our bird feeders.

American Goldfinch at our Bird Feeder

An American goldfinch eats from one of our squirrel proof bird feeders. Two doves hunt for seeds that have dropped to the ground below. The plastic umbrella shaped top on the feeder allows tiny birds to sit on perch even when it's raining.

The pole that supports this feeder had to be installed at a slant to deter squirrels. When it was straight, the squirrel would climb up the metal pole, then jump to the feeder perch. We also tried spraying the pole with 10 - 40 to make it slippery. But, the spray washed off with each rain.

This is the book we have found to be the most helpful. It has more than one picture of each bird because males and females and adults and juveniles often have different plumage.

Dove and Purple Finches on Bird Feeder.

Dove watches finches on our bird feeder

Doves usually are content to search for seeds that have dropped on the ground under our bird feeders. But the smaller doves can sit on the bar and eat directly from the feeder. When small birds like these purple finches land on the bar, the doves often fly on to the top of the feeder and annoy them until they leave.

Great page, thanks. We have had one bird feeder that was supposed to be squirrel proof that wasn't. We haven't had either of the kinds you mention here and they both look good.

This morning, my husband hung an all-metal bird feeder from a single metal 'rope' high in the tree. Hopefully, the single rope is too long for the squirrels to slide down and, when they do, the metal roof of the bird feeder is not going to allow them any grasp. It is also too far from anything that the squirrels can leap from. We'll see.

I love your videos and pictures. There's no chance of a Sandhill Crane visiting our yard!

Lovely photos and a good selection of videos. You might like the video of the bear trying to get seed from a bird feeder. I have the video on my Wildlife of New Hampshire lens.
