Israel is a tremendous interest to birders. Why? What makes this location unique?

Israel is an area of tremendous interest to ornithologists because it is situated on one of the major Palearctic-African migration routes.

For this reason I have chosen Israel as one of the top spots of the world to go birding:

Israel's unique location at the junction of three continents, Europe, Asia and Africa, makes it a site for an extraordinary phenomena: some 500 million migrating birds cross its skies twice a year.

BIRDS of the BIBLE - #1 - Turtledove

1 %u2013 Turtledove -- Jer. 8:7 and Solomon 2:12

Smaller and slighter in build than other doves, the Turtle Dove may be recognised by its browner colour, and the black and white striped patch on the side of its neck, but it is its tail that catches the eye when it flies from the observer; it is wedge shaped, with a dark centre and white borders and tips. When viewed from below this pattern, owing to the white under tail coverts obscuring the dark bases, is a blackish chevron on a white ground. This is noticeable when the bird stoops to drink, raising its spread tail.

The mature bird has the head, neck, flanks, and rump blue grey, and the wings cinnamon, mottled with black. The breast is vinaceous, the abdomen and under tail coverts are white. The bill is black, the legs and eyerims are red. The black and white patch on the side of the neck is absent in the browner and duller juvenile bird, which also has the legs brown.

The turtledove is mentioned in Jeremiah 8:7 among the birds that "observe well the time of each one's coming in," evidently indicating annual migration. Reference must be to the common turtledove, since the others found in Palestine do not migrate but stay there all year round. The common turtledove was an unerring harbinger of spring in Palestine, arriving there from the S in early April and 'making its voice heard in the land'.

BIRDS of the BIBLE - # 2 - Stork

# 2 - Stork -- Jer. 8: 7 Even the stork in the heavens-it well knows its appointed times;

The white stork (Ciconia ciconia) and the black stork (Ciconia nigra) are found in Israel. The stork is a large, long-legged wading bird similar to the ibis and heron. The white stork (Ciconia ciconia) has white plumage except for the flight feathers of its wings, which are a glossy black. An adult stork may stand as much as 1.2 m (4 ft) high, measuring nearly 1.2 m (4 ft) in body length, with a magnificent wingspan that may extend up to 2 m (6.5 ft). Its long red bill, broad at the base and sharply pointed, is used by the stork in probing in the mud for frogs, fish, or small reptiles. The black stork, so named for its black head, neck, and back, is more common in the Hula and Bet She?an valleys and it seeks trees, where available, to build its nest. The psalmist referred to the storks nesting in the tall juniper trees.-Ps 104:17. A Pair of Black Storks Protect Their Young

BIRDS of the BIBLE - # 3 - Partridge

# 3 - Partridge - 1 Samuel 26:20 ....just as one chases a partridge upon the mountains.

Two kinds of partridges found in Israel are the sand partridge (Ammoperdix heyi) and the rock partridge, or chukar (Alectoris graeca). The sand partridge is found in deserts and on rocky slopes, while the rock partridge is found principally in the hill country that is covered with sparse vegetation.
Pale blue-grey plumage on upperparts that assumes a reddish tinge on the back. Black outline around snow-white throat, black bars on flanks. L 33 cm
Lives on steep, sun-exposed cliffs above 1200m where rocks alternate with brush and meadows Usually moves in coveys on the ground. In the face of danger, it runs uphill.
The partridge has a delicate flesh and was hunted as food from ancient times, the hunters often using throwing sticks to bring down the bird when it was flushed from cover. Since the partridge seeks escape by running, dodging behind rocks and other obstacles, and seeking out a hiding place in clefts of rocks or similar places of concealment, David, moving from hiding place to hiding place in his endeavor to evade King Saul's relentless pursuit, aptly likened himself to "a partridge upon the mountains."-

Description: Pale reddish-brown plumage with distinct black and white stripes on wings and tail. The beak is thin, very long, and slightly bent to the ground. L 28 cm. Habitat: Common in Southern Europe, lives in open country with groups of trees, builds its nests in holesthat it finds in trees, walls and even on the ground. The nest gives off a disagreeable odor produced by secretions of the bird's oil glands, and it also becomes foul smelling due to the bird's failure to clean the nest of excrement Behaviour: Flies clumsily in irregular curves. Its walk seems staggering and unstable. In search of food, the hoopoe often stops after a few steps, stabs its beak deep into the ground for a couple of times, and then runs off in a different direction. Diet: Regarded as dirty and stinking because it searches for bugs, larvae, and worms in animal dung. According to Greek writers, it also builds its nest from human excrement

Cool lens! The birds in Israel are amazing! Once my friend Urit shoved me during a walk at HaOgen. When I asked her whats going on, she replied..."Don't walk under that tree"...For sure I would have gotten a "blessing from above", you could hardly see the leaves, with all the birds that were sitting there!!! Hehehe

In a desert land he found him,
in a barren and howling waste.
He shielded him and cared for him;
he guarded him as the apple of his eye,
like an eagle that stirs up its nest
and hovers over its young,
that spreads its wings to catch them
and carries them on its pinions.
