Birds of Prey - Awaiting the Dark Knight's Return

Birds of Prey is a television series produced in 2002, loosely based on the Birds of Prey DC Comics series. Despite weekly ratings of 7.6 million viewers and the network's largest audience in the 18-34 demographic at the time, The WB cancelled the series. There were thirteen episodes produced in total.

The good news is that six years later they have released the Birds of Prey episodes onto DVD! The collector's set is now available!

What's It All About?

Who are The Birds of Prey?

Birds of PreyThe series is set in New Gotham City, several years after Batman has abandoned it. Barbara Gordon and Helena, The Huntress, take over his war on crime. Dinah joins them after she helps them defeat a villain in the pilot. Alfred Pennyworth, who serves Helena as heir to the Wayne estate, and Detective Jesse Reese, a police officer confronted with crimes and abilities he cannot explain are the other two main characters (for good!).

As time goes on the Birds of Prey find themselves confronted with schemes masterminded by Dr. Quinzel who happens to be Helena's therapist, although they don't know about her involvement until the final episodes. Her attempts to discover what Helena is hiding, with the contrast of their sessions together, is the main theme of the series and is resolved at the end.

Even though the series was pulled prematurely, the plot is consistent and comes to a logical end.

The Main Characters

Here is a description of each of the main characters in Birds of Prey

Helena Kyle - Huntress

Played by Ashley Scott

Helena is the daughter of Batman and Catwoman. She has inherited cat-like abilities from her mother. These include enhanced agility, strength, healing and a sixth sense, oh, and she can see in the dark. She never knew who her father was until Catwoman was murdered by the Joker. After that, Barbara Gordon took her in and raised her.

She has a little bit of an attitude problem.

Barbara Gordon - Oracle (and formerly Batgirl)

Played by Dina Meyer

When the Joker shot her Barbara Gordon was paralyzed and could not continue as Batgirl. She has now become Oracle, using her expertise in computers and weaponry to fight crime in place of Batman. She directs Huntress from the New Gotham Clocktower were she has a view of the whole city. By day, she is a teacher at New Gotham High School.

Dinah Redmond

Played by Rachel Skarsten

Dinah is drawn to New Gotham, and then Helena and Barbara, by visions of the night of the Joker's revenge. She meets the two and is invited to join the team, on condition that she trains herself on how to use her abilities. As well as her precognitive dreams, Dinah can read the thoughts of someone she touches, and also has a developing telekinesis ability. Her mother is Carolyn Lance, the legendary superhero Black Canary, who gave her up for her own safety when she was a child.

Jesse Reese - Detective

Played by Shemar Moore

Jesse Reese encounters Huntress while investigating a series of apparent suicides. He is both drawn to her and disapproving of her lack of respect for the law. They are thrown together by a number of cases. Reese's father is Al Hawke, head of a crime family and sworn enemy of Carolyn Lance, Dinah's mother.

Dr Harleen Quinzel - Harley Quinn

Played by Mia Sara

Dr Harleen Quinzel is the psychiatrist Helena is ordered to see after her conviction of vandalism while she was chasing a thief. She was the lover of the Joker and is seeking her revenge on New Gotham. She has bouts of insanity (AND she's a psychiatrist!) during which she hatches numerous schemes to exact her revenge on the city of New Gotham.

Alfred Pennyworth - Butler

Alfred is the ever-faithful butler for the Wayne family. When Batman disappeared he looked after Barbara and Helena and is ever-present taking care of their needs.
