Flight Filled Feathered Friends

Bird are amazing creatures! There are so many remarkable things about them from their hollow bones, wing design, beak structures, unique purposes for feet and claws, and miracles with their eyes! Here are resources that my children and I used during a unit study about birds. You will notice several "blips" by my second grader shared as we studied. (Pictures of our lapbooks are still to come!) Join us in our studies, give your opinions, share your knowledge, and add any lenses or webpages you have created or know about that deal with birds!

Birds of the Bible Puzzle for Kids

Genesis 1:20-23 ~ And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." And there was evening, and there was morning-the fifth day.

Psalm 104:12 ~ The birds of the air nest by the waters; they sing among the branches.

Matthew 6:25-27 ~ "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

Learning Resources for Kids

Many of these are great for lapbooks & notebooks!

SandpiperAt my homeschool blog J.O.Y. Christian School, you will find an Animal Unit ~ I created these when my children were doing a unit on mammals in 2009, but several of the items may be used when studying birds, also. (Several other resources for mammals are also there!)

Games: Animal Picture & Word Cards, Animal Parts of Speech Game, Alphabet Animal Sort Game, Animal Short & Long Vowel Game, Animal Syllable Sort Game, Compound Word Animals File Folder Game, Animal Vocabulary Cards
Scientific Classification Labels: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
Lapbook Pieces: 5 Kingdoms of Animals, What is a Vertebrate & Invertebrate? Mini Books, Classes of Invertebrates Mini Book, Classes of Vertebrates Mini Book, Classification Accordion Mini Books, Mammal Characteristics (I'll probably create a bird one like this.).
Notebook / Worksheet Pages: Dividers - Animal Kingdom, Sub-Kingdoms Vertebrate & Invertebrate, Phylum Chordates, Class Mammalia, Animal Notebook Pages, Animal Vocabulary Sheets, God's Amazing Animals
Charts: Classification of Living Things Charts, Animal Line-Up Chart
Worksheets: Rhyme, Unscramble, Spell, & Write
Links: Classification Power Points, Creation Resources, Noah Resources

God's Animals Unit is a huge resource bank of units, lessons, materials of all sorts about almost every type of animal that I collected and posted in early 2009. The Bird Section has links to all sorts of kid friendly materials and lessons for kids about birds. A special section on penguins is also listed.

Bird Activities for Children at DLTK have some awesome crafts, coloring pages, mini-books, mazes, songs and rhymes, and more!

All About Birds! at KidZone is fun and easy to read for elementary children. It groups birds into similar categories and contains a few puzzles in between! Try two science experiments related to birds - "soft shelled eggs" and "knotted bones".

The articles Going to the Birds: Planning Your Study and Gathering Your Resources by Lynda Ackert have some great ideas to get you started on a bird study!

If you really enjoy unit studies, lapbooks, and notebooks, the best place to find free quality ones is without a doubt Homeschool Share! All of the units and materials are written and created by homeschool educators who want to share them with students and teachers everywhere. They include literature (fiction and non-fiction) along with several other curriculum areas. They may be used in whole or in part. Sometimes we have just pulled out one or two things from a unit that fit our studies best. New ones are added a few times a year. Units for all kinds of animals are here, but the ones particularly for birds are:
~ Backyard Birds
~ Bald Eagles
~ Birds of Prey
~ Chickens

hearing birds sing

says:

Enjoy both so it is difficult to make a choice here. Living in an orchard in Mexico we get to enjoy an enormous variety of birds. We absolutely love the hummingbirds that visit our garden multiple times each day.

Pastiche says:

I love to listen to the birds - their chatter, their songs, their subtle conversations.

ChaunyWrites says:

hearing them sing.

pheonix76 says:

I love the diversity of bird songs --- from the relatively simple song a chipping sparrow to the complex and beautiful song of the winter wren. Some of the most beautiful songs come from drab birds.

Philippians468 says:

i love to hear their song! cheers

seeing their array of colors

KimAnisi says:

Hard to say, I like the combination of both. Sometimes I hear a bird and wonder where it's hiding, sometimes I see a bird and wish it would sing. I just love them, no matter what they do!

blackspanielgallery says:

I actually see more birds than hear them.

ajgodinho says:

There is something about hearing birds in the early hours of the morning, but I do enjoy seeing their array of colors!

Craftybegonia says:

Wonderful lens! Love the photos.

Jimmie says:

I am very visual, so looking at them in silence is fine with me.

Birds Throughout the Year

Mallard DuckMallard Photo

What do birds do throughout the year?
~ "You may think that all birds do spring, summer, and fall is just get food and eat it, but they actually do different things than that.
~ In spring they build their nests and lay eggs. There is lots of insects for them to eat
~ In summer the eggs hatch. The mother and the father feed the babies. They get food like worms, bugs, different types of bugs, and beetles.
They might find some bees, but they sting, so I don't think they would like those! They molt, too. (They lose feathers and grow new ones!)
~ Some birds store away food in the fall so they don't have to in the winter when it is too late.
~ Some birds migrate In winter and some stay. Migrate means to go from one place to another when it gets cold to a warm place."

Musical Birds

This whole lens was inspired by Vivaldi's "Spring" from The Four Seasons. After listening to those beautiful musical birds, we wanted to learn more about birds and their songs!
I hope to share more musical bird lenses in the future from Peter & the Wolf, Carnival of the Animals, and others such as the "The Bird" Charlie Parker!

Sharing Our Bookshelf

Here are a few bird books that we use to study birds!

We also use the Usborne Spotter's Guide for Birds of North America which I could not find at Amazon to give you a picture, but I know they have several similar to it for the children to use as reference when we are bird watching.

How to Build a Home by Maria Fleming is another book my youngster enjoyed. It is about several types of animal homes.

I don't know if I can say this here or not, but, most libraries have the Zoobook series, field guides, and many more amazing books for children readily available for borrowing! :) We never leave the library without carrying out a large bag of books!

Bird Beaks

A summary of bird beaks by my young man!

birds,beaks,animals

"All birds have beaks."

Do all birds have the same kind of beak?
"No! Some are short, some are long, some have something like a tooth.
Some are large, some are small on birds. Bird beaks are for birds to eat with."

Tell me about the different kinds of beaks.
"A pelican's beak just looks normal before it is filled up. It looks like there is a flap of skin under it. Then when its beak gets filled, the flap of skin works like a bucket. The flap of skin gets big and it's long.

Meat tearer's beaks have something that looks like a tooth at the front of the beak. They use it for tearing apart meats and stuff like that.

Hummingbird's beaks are like straws. See, like they put their beaks into the flower and (sucking sounds). That's how they use their beaks.

Ducks and platypuses have water strainer beaks. Water strainer beaks are like strainers that you have. You know like when ducks put their beaks under water and just their feet stick out at the surface, that's when they get their food. They open their mouth and they close their mouth. Their head goes up and the water has small plants and animals that they like to eat. Then the water gets drained out and the little animals and plants get eaten by the duck.

Cardinals are seed crackers. They eat hard seeds. Their beaks are hard but strong. They use their beaks to crack hard seeds.

An insect picker picks bugs off of bark and leaves. Sometimes they fly down and pick bugs in the air."

Bird Eggs

Bird EggsWhat are baby birds like?
"Baby birds hatch from eggs that mother birds lay and how they hatch is with an egg tooth. Once they don't need the egg tooth, they loose it. It is at the tip of the beak. Some baby birds are born with their feathers and their eyes open! The ones with feathers are down feathers and they're very soft to touch. Some baby birds are born with their eyes closed and no feathers. They're naked!" - Words of an 8 year old!

Penquins

Photo thanks to Stan ShebsWe studied penguins thoroughly two years ago as part of an ocean unit we completed, so we did not do much with them this time. But, for anyone who may want to study these "cool" birds, here are some of the resources we used. (I will add pictures when I have time to pull our scrapbook off the shelf and photograph them!)

~ The Penguin Unit at Enchanted Learning has numerous printout pages, diagrams, mini informational books, quizzes, labeling pages, reading comprehension, and other activities that are fantastic for learning! They make great pages for notebooks and lapbooks, also!
~ Penguin Teacher Guides from Sea World & Busch Gardens. There are tow guides K-3, and 4-8 that are packed full of activities for a complete unit on its own. Lesson plans with curriculum connections to many subjects are contained along with flashcards, vocabulary, and printable maps and other items.
~ There is an adorable Penguin Lapbook Unit at Lapbook Lesson from Valerie! It includes 17 mini books, a cover, and a video to help with the book. Another wonderful free Penguin Lapbook is available from Angela Frampton, also.
~ Ami Brainard (Homeschool Share Creator) created a wonderful multi-curricular unit study and lapbook based around the book Mr. Popper's Penguins. Pictures may be found at her blog, Walking by the Way. A few other penguin mini-books are found within the Polar Animal lapbook at Homeschool Share. Another mini unit for Mr. Popper's Penguins may be found at Homeschool Helper.
