Bird's beaks are very powerful tools. One of my chickens kept looking at what I thought was my camera as I took a photo, but she poked at my eye with that powerful beak! Luckily it was just a bruise on the eyelid. Impressive lens with great info and a beautiful selection of photos and videos, esp. the little owl.

Beaks really do vary by utility. That diagram showing the different types of beaks and what they're used for is helpful. Woodpeckers annoy me though because they peck on my roof a lot which causes an awful noise in the morning.

I'm from the land of the dodo.... an extinct bird. We should all learn from the extinction of the dodo so that we can preserve all other birds.
  • SereneSea May 9, 2011 @ 3:31 am | delete
Loved growing through the Bird wiki and the evolving of beaks. Indeed they are all a part of nature's migration and adapting by birds.

The beak is every malleable, it can change, through the generations, if the feeding habits have to change because of food variability.

Interesting. You obviously put a lot of effort and time into this lens. I know the subject is beaks, but I learned there were almost 400 types of sparrows. I knew there were a lot, but had no idea there were that many.

I had a bird a on my lawn yesterday. I can't think of the name. I didn't see it on this lens. It's the one's that are white with real long legs and long beak's, something like the one in your last big photo. But this was really white. Anyway I opened my door and it came almost right up to me. I thought it might come in. I think it was hungry. I have cats, but I think this bird would have hurt them if they went at it. it was so big! I just gave it bread and it liked that. Well your lens just reminded me of how fascinating bird's are:) Great job Joni

Excellent lens. Very interesting. I like watching the birds from my window, while working. There's quite a variety of beaks even here in London: Heron, woodpeckers, parakeets (native to India, but have escaped and formed a large breeding colony in west London) and even an occasional kestrel... All without getting up from my desk!
