I saw a hawk in my front yard attaching the sparrows and chickadees I feed every day. The hawk when into my front hedges and grabbed a small sparrow and swooped into the air. It was fearless and beautiful. I felt bad for my little sparrows that come to eat at my feeders everyday. They were so scared to come out and drink the water from my bird bath and hid all day in the bushes afraid to do to the feeder. This hawk comes by a lot since I have lots of different birds and squirrels in my yard every day. It is January 31, 2012. I'm from Long Island, NY

Probably about 2 weeks ago I saw a Cooper's Hawk flying between the trees. We see them fairly often in our wooded area, especially in the winter.

Our commonest hawks in Britain are the sparrow hawk and the buzzard. Great birds, great lens, blessed.

I saw one ( kinda in my back yard, my back yard borders a state park in kentucky)I was playing with frank he is my pet rooster. The hawk was in a tree watching the hins I have never had problems from those birds before. But nature can sneek up on you in different ways. Mosty all we have are red tailed ones but this one was a browish with white on its tail. dont no much of hawks this one was large so i put the chickens up for the night The day I saw it was the sixteenth day of december 2011

I don't think I've once seen a hawk that wasn't soaring in the sky. I always wondered if they were making long distance trips because I'd never see them touch the ground. Most I ever saw was a red hawk diving at another bird in the air.

Hawks soar around our home every day. We hear their cries and see them on the hunt. Once in awhile we see smaller birds chasing them away ...

Many of these beautiful birds we have in Sweden too. I have always been interested in them. This lens is blessed out of hawk-love =D

I'm lucky enough to live by a bird sanctuary, so yes, I've seen a few recently. I'm lensrolling this to my lens, My Pal The Great Horned Owl & Trees Please.
  • CruiseReady Apr 25, 2011 @ 9:53 am | delete
We have seen one in our back yard several times recently. I think it may be the same kind you are seeing you your yard, but I'm not sure. He took out a dove! And I am watching my kitty very closely, too. Kitty only goes out under direct supervision, but if the hawk is about, I scoop him up and get him back inside post haste!
  • Trish Wyckoff May 10, 2011 @ 6:28 pm | delete
I too had the same type of thing happen in our front yard, but the dove and hawk hit our front bay window. The dove died and the hawk was a bit shaken!

We see red-tailed hawks every day. There are many living in the hills right next to us. We always know when they're above because the mockingbirds go nuts. We once saw one fly by with a large snake in its mouth. They're so beautiful in flight. We can sit for hours on the porch watching them in the summer.

I have a Red Tail Hawk that visits my home daily. I put out raw deer meat and he wouldn't touch it which made me question what kind of hawk he was. He was content with getting the bugs in the yard. Bottom line, he is simply beautiful.....

You are so right about how it is too late when the hawk swoops in on it's prey. My Dad had told me that I didn't have to worry about Eagles taking our kittens but it's the hawks you need to watch for. Sure enough one day I was sitting outside and suddenly a hawk came from nowhere and took a kitten right in front of me, I was shocked! They are great hunters and beautiful birds.

We think we saw a hawk in our back yard tree this afternoon. It caught me by surprise because of it's size. We're used to seeing crows and bluejays, but this guy was much bigger and was grey with a spotted chest, my binoculars aren't that strong. He was beautifull to look regardless of what it was.

Hawks are the symbol for the complexity of life. They are predators, something to be feared, yet they are also noble and life affirming.

We have a lot of red tails where I live. I think the last one I saw was maybe a month ago. I love watching them, and once one flew right in front of my car...about even with the windshield. It was so beautiful but still spooked me a bit as I was afraid I would hit it.

saw a BIG hawk grab its breakfast in the little grassy field next to me...right next to a natural spring...i wanted to say it was a red-tailed, but could have been a cooper's or swainson's? didnt see enough info on which are more native to my area of nc...good day all!

We had a hawk crash into our window at camp and die instantly while my partner was on the deck squatted down in frontof the window doing maintenance on the building. It just missed him. It was strange. Any thoughts?

Bird of prey haws have a sharp eye sight like eagles and it is sad that we keep losing precious species of birds due to rapid urbanization. A good collection of facts.

hi there, I lived in hawk country in Morgan Hill, California and had run-ins with hawks that were here and there usually on a monthly or two monthly visit on my land. I have a question that I have not been able to find an answer to for years. two of the hawks that visited all the time always had a "black bird" or near that type of bird who followed them each time they flew. Why? It seemed that the hawks were never without the bird in tow. Would love to understand that as I am a writer and have written about a hawk and bird, but am not sure of the relationship. Thanks, by the way, I saved a huge hawk that landed on my deck. I spent a day with him, what an experience... you can e-mail me at moto04@live.com Thanks Mo

Saw a hawk last weekend soaring over a baseball field in Cary, NC. I am very used to seeing the red-tail hawk in our area, but this one had more gray color to top and entirely white underneath. Any clue what this species would be? Do we have Peregrine falcons in my area? Any ideas appreciated! mattmmille@aol.com Thanks!

not the last hawk i saw but here's an interesting story. late december i was on my way to a green bay packer football game with two friends. we were about one half mile north of the exit to the stadium traveling southbound on hwy 41 in stop and go traffic. a hawk ( i would guess a red shoulder hawk) flew over traffic and made a play for a rabbit along side the freeway. his attempt was unsuccessful and the rabbit ran under a low growing tangle of brush. the hawk made a sharp turn and perched in a poplar tree waiting. sure enough before i moved in traffic the rabbit hopped out from under the brush and wham! the hawk grabbed him right there in the snow filled ditch, cool move by an elegant predator. looking around at other drivers, i wondered if anyone else had even saw the whole thing.

In wintertime, the telephone poles of Texas sprout hawks, sunning in the early morning or watching the roadsides for lunch. Thanks to all you northern states that send them here for the winter. We really enjoy having them.

Hawk in my yard 10 minutes ago - not sure what type, small, brown back, speckled beige belly - the sparrows all hid in the shrub and stopped their chattering - my housepet bunny went deathly still too. snapped a couple of photos, but didn't have the right lens, so it's not a close-up.

Love this lens... I didn't know that hawks fly in flocks, really interesting. The "Watch Them Soar" print is gorgeous.

Thanks for popping into my domino pendant lens...as always, I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
