Birdwatchers in China help protect the environment.

It was also only about nine years ago that bird-watching was first introduced into China.

Birdwatching also helps protect the environment by increasing people's awareness. Bird-watching societies have collected much data on endangered bird species, which is helpful for government departments involved in environmental protection.

No trip to China would be complete without visiting Wanglang Nature Reserve, established in 1963 by the Sichuan Forestry Bureau, is located in the Minshan Mountains in some of China's most important panda habitat. Wanglang, whose purpose is to protect the giant panda and its habitat, and the 10 other nearby reserves in remote areas of northern Sichuan are critical to the continued survival of the giant panda.
Birds in Wanglang: Many birds inhabit or migrate through Wanglang. A bird list containing common and rare species is available at the Wanglang Forest Lodge.

Where to Birdwatch in China

Beidaihe -- A Must for Bird Watchers
One of the best places in the world to see migratory birds.
Zhalong-Dancing with Cranes
Zhalong Wetland hosts more than 260 species of birds, including 35 species of national protection birds, particularly home for cranes. There are over 2000 wild red-crowned cranes in the world, while Zhalong Reserve has more than 400 of them.

Red-crowned Crane

__NOTOC__

The Red-crowned Crane (Grus japonensis), also called the Japanese Crane or Manchurian Crane, is a large crane and is the second rarest crane in the world. (; ; Hanyu Pinyin: D?nd?ng Hè; , tancho; the Chinese character '?' means 'red', '?/?' means 'crown' and '?/?' means 'crane'). In East Asia, it is known as a symbol of luck, longevity and fidelity. At 140 cm (55 inches) high, the crane does not make easy prey, for all that it stands out in its natural habitat of marshes and swamps. When it matures, the Red-crowned Crane is snow white with a patch of red skin on its head. This patch of skin becomes bright red when the crane becomes angry or excited. This species is the heaviest crane, typically 7.7-10 kg (17-22 lb)Red-crowned Crane - ICF, although large Sarus Cranes are taller.[http://www.harrivainolaphoto.com/sarus.html Sarus Crane - The World's Tallest Flying Bird] The maximum weight a male Red-crowned Crane is known to attain would be 15 kg (33 lbs.)Welcome to Cyber Crane

In the spring and summer, the Red-crowned Crane breeds in Siberia and occasionally in northeastern Mongolia (i.e., Mongol Daguur Strictly Protected Area). Normally the crane lays 2 eggs, with only one surviving. Later, in the fall, it migrates in flocks to Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, and other countries in East Asia to spend the winter. All Red-crowned Cranes migrate, except for a flock that is resident in Hokkaid?.

The crane eats small amphibians, aquatic invertebrates, insects, and plants that grow in marshes and swamps.

The habitat used is marshes, riverbanks, rice fields, and other wet areas.
