heard of the english zodiac and the chinese zodiac.
But never a birth totem. And this actually gives me better insight than both.

Funny during one of the scariest times of my life a bear visited me in a dream, I like to think it was a grizzly. This bear walked me through the process of that time and my life changed in some respects for the better.
  • Nightcat Apr 20, 2012 @ 8:37 pm | delete
Simply lovely! I've read some of the books you have listed. I suppose being a deer is as good as anything else, but did I have to be born as a game animal? Aty least there is Deer Woman not that she is a good example, but she does kick butt. :)

I like my butterfly clan but didn'rt know about the connection to Golden Eagle. Thank you!
  • Ninche Apr 14, 2012 @ 6:37 am | delete
Well...I'm not sure if I'm an owl or a snake, but your lens is really interesting!

I wish I could afford to have a consultation. I have checked totems, and have found me to be listed as Crow, Horse, Owl.
I love them all......... and love the descriptions.........
  • BevsPaper Mar 24, 2012 @ 5:10 pm | delete
Your totem of birth is determined from the moon that you were born under and it never changes. You also have power totems that stay as constants...there are a total of 9. Then there are totems that work as messengers and they will come and go as the need arises. You are welcome to use the contact button on my profile page and I will see if I can help you figure a few things out.

A woodpecker, huh. Answers the question of why there are so many of them everywhere I go, and at home, too. So much of what it said is so accurate. Not that I'm all that surprised. It also explains why I'm so attracted to certain animal spirits, the ones that represent my children, especially my oldest child. We've always had a very strong psychic bond. Thanks, this brings things into a clearer perspective, and validates a lot of my intuitive feelings.

This has become a positive influence and each morning when I go outside I acknowledge my birth totem who sits in one f many trees around me. I always hear them and respect the bond.i

Owl here. Years ago when I first bought Animal Speak I was reading about how shaman identified their animal totem sometimes by surviving attack by that animal. The next day I was bitten by a macaw. Lucky he didn't get a better grip on my pinky because he wasn't fooling around.

This was very interesting, this tells me that I am have the Owl as my birth totem! This makes sense to me, although I wish it were the Raven, you have made me realize that Raven is really my Messenger Animal Spirit. I have been listening to Raven since the day she brought me a very important message over 20 years ago!
  • Zoe Aug 11, 2011 @ 4:24 am | delete
Thanks for the info. According to the list, I am Wolf totem, which I do relate to. However, I have been told I am persistent, which falls under Snow Goose. In one shamanic journey, I saw Snake. Wondering if the totem changes over time? Or perhaps, we have a birth totem, like a sun chart, and the other animals may represent something else.
  • Michael Aug 30, 2011 @ 12:43 am | delete
There is never just one totem. You have a birth totem that will relate to your birthday and most information I have collected says that this will stay with you, but there will be many other totems that you learn and grow from. Some may come only once and you won't realize it until it's already happened, or some may blatantly guide you for long periods of time; However, it will be different for everyone and everyone will experience it differently. Hopefully this helps you because it really helps me.
  • libra83 Aug 10, 2011 @ 3:19 am | delete
my birth totem is the raven or crow. I saved a crow's life once; it had a broken wing and was laying in the street, in the pouring rain. it's cool to find out why I 'Needed' to help it that day. thanks!

I was surprised to see how accurate the two birth totems I have are. I'm on the cusp, within the hour of midnight, so I find I have traits from both Cancer & Leo, and now from Woodpecker and Salmon. Very interesting, this.

This is very interesting. My totem is the Crow/Raven. Now I understand why I so often think all this stuff is just so much...hmm..."hooey" is the only word I can find. Your description uses the word "illusion." That is correct. I often feel that this is all just an illusion and ponder the thoughts related to that concept. Great lens. Thanks. Lensrolled.

I am the OWL, how can it be anything else, I'm wise, truly a NIGHT OWL, I love the dark. Now if I could just see in the dark I wouldn't keep walking into things.

Hunh, so I'm a deer. As a Gemini, does that make me twin deer? :D I didn't know these existed. Thanks for the educational lens.

    I'm a crow :) Interesting lens.

wow, I kind of got goosebumps reading about my totem animal. pretty cool!
  • kajohu Sep 7, 2010 @ 7:27 pm | delete
This is an enjoyable read :) My birth totem is the woodpecker. "Completely devoted at expense to self" -- that sounds familiar for when I was raising our boys. It's been hard to back off and let them have their own lives!
  • missbat Sep 7, 2010 @ 1:09 pm | delete
Never knew that I was a Beaver. Figures, being that I live in the Beaver State! Great lens!

  • resabi Jul 17, 2010 @ 2:29 am | delete
Fun and interesting lens. I found out my totem is a crow or raven. Hmmm... Still trying to figure out if it fits. My daughter's doesn't fit at all, but if she'd been born when she was supposed to be then that one would have fit her perfectly!
  • LeanneChesser Jul 16, 2010 @ 2:52 am | delete
Oh, I love this lens. It's fascinating to read about the different birth animal totems. Pretty accurate, too!!

Can't believe I am only just visiting this lens for the first time Bev :) It is fascinating.

I am a deer married to a very wise owl, who is mother to a deer, two woodpeckers and a brown bear!

Fascinating to learn about birth totems. My self-view says I'm a bear, but my birth date says Wolf ... interesting.

The Birth Totem is entirely new to me.

I just found out that I was a Snake.....not crazy about that idea.
  • enslavedbyfaeries Feb 20, 2010 @ 9:34 am | delete
This is so interesting! I have honestly never heard of a birth totem before and enjoyed learning about my moon signs which actually seemed very accurate to my personality. I love that my spirit keeper is a white buffalo too, very cool!

I'm currently working on a lens about my totem animal art series and am going to include other lenses about the subject. Which is how I came across yours. Great find! 5*

Always interesting to visit our Native American customs and philosophy. I am Tawadi- Cherokee for Hawk. My keen eyesight??? Speed of flight??? and precision movements??? are a distant memory... but at least I do have some memory of them! ;-)

The owl has come silently back, albeit during the day. He has a message in his beak, which he has dropped here. Blessed by an Angel.

Well, I'm not much of a Deer, but I've never been much of a Gemini either. This was a really enjoyable read and a new way of looking at the Zodiac.

Lovely, lovely, lovely, and more lovely. My daughter is going to be so jealous that I am a wolf and she isn't, since she absolutely adores wolves. I'm going to lensroll this to Woman Who Hobbles After Wolves

Lovely lens, thoroughly enjoyed it, and as it turns out was very pleased to see I'm an Owl. The irony is I cannot hear a sound.

Cool! I can hardly wait to tell my children I am a Raven. Of course, my daughter is a deer and my son is a snake. He will love that! And it is true, he is very wise. The one I am laughing over the most is my husband is a woodpecker. Empathy, yes but listening? Really?
  • HorseAndPony Sep 8, 2009 @ 10:17 am | delete

Thank you for recommending my new lens /www.squidoo.com/the-almanac-that-fixes-time/">The Almanac That Fixes Time on your fine lens. Looks like I am a deer. I've always loved deer, maybe that is why.
A look at your lenses show me that I have still a lot to learn. Thank you for your support at Senior Squids.

I knew there were such things as birth totems, but had never seen information on them. I never would have guessed that I'd be a brown bear, but people would tell you, it does fit. Very interesting lens!

Uncanny how accurate this was. Also how it relates so much to the Chinese years.
It would be great if you could add some more history about how all of this came about.
  • jptanabe Jul 24, 2009 @ 2:01 pm | delete
This is so cool! I seem to be a salmon - never thought much was good about the salmon (except the taste) but now I see a lot of value. Thanks!

Incredibly interesting and enlightening lens. I never even heard of having a totem animal or a moon sign. It turns out I am of the wolf totem and frog clan. I agree with much of the characetristics except for the appreciation of rain. Then that's not altogether true. I guess I do appreciate the need for rain, but being from Southern California, I really don't like it.
