Why do you want the poem written?: 1st Birthday and to explain to hannah how much I love her and will stand by her always.

What are the key messages you would like to send?: My wife and I had been trying for our first child for a few years and were not having much luck, and Hannah was such a blessing for us. I want her to know that I will watch her grow and continue to watch my love grow for her. I want her know that she can always come to me no matter what the situation. I want to her to know I will always stand beside her.I want her to be able to read this in 15 years and say "wow dad has stuck to his word" She is my pride and joy.

Do you have any funny, sad, happy, embarrassing or otherwise memorable moments that you would like to share?: Hannah was born Febuary 13 2002 rather early and unexpected, mom was in labor only 45 minutes and baby was born with fluid in her lungs.She had to spend a few nights in Neonatual ICU. We were unable to hold her at first and it broke my heart to see her there, and me not being able to help her in anyway. I thought i would much rather switch places with her for a few days.But she is a healthy smart, yet strongwilled(like her mom) 1 year old.When we were in the hospital we got a terrible ice storm and roads were almost impassible but it didnt keep away family members and friends from coming to see her. It is clear this child holds a strong place in all of our hearts. This Christmas when opening a gift, she ripped into the package to reveal a Baby einstein video only to proclaim in a monotone unimpressed vioce "wow" and put it down.

Do you have any other comments or thoughts?: Hannah loves to play peek a boo and waller dad, and loves to keep taking off her socks no matter how many times we put them back on her. I want this to let her know that this world she is coming into is not a very good place, but with Gods' help I will protect her and teach her right and wrong the best I can. I am truley blessed to have two truely great girls in my life ... hannah and my wife Michelle. I see Michelle in Hannah so much and all I can do is smile, and thank God

Do you have any last comments or thoughts: I just want this to be as special on her 16th bday as it will be On Febuary 13 2004. i would like to add her nickname if that is ok. Her first nickname was "bird" because her mouth was always open ready to eat. If you could add that for me it would be great!! Thanks so much and i look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hello, Hannah Delia Grace Gabbard,
these words are just for you,
because I'm so proud of who you are
and I'm very proud of what you do.

And Mommy and I waited and waited for you,
and now finally, we feel like we've been blessed,
and just for the record, you understand,
Hannah, you are truly one of the best.

I can feel my love for you growing every day,
and it's so fascinating just to watch you grow
just know that you can always come to me, (no matter what)
oh yes, there's a few other things that you should know.

You make your parents so very proud
and it's a unique feeling ' that parent's pride,
and we couldn't have chosen a finer daughter,
we couldn't ' even if we'd tried.

And I want you to know I'll always be with you,
in fifteen years, these words will have stood the test of time,
and when you're sixteen, I want you to say 'Wow',
Dad really meant what he said in that rhyme.

Because truly you are my pride and joy
and mine is not only the heart you hold a special place,
because you simply light up the world,
every time a smile appears on your beautiful face.

And your arrival on planet earth was not easy,
we were unable to hold you on your first nights,
but you've proved to be healthy, smart and strong willed
and I guess I can look forward to a few father daughter fights.

And a snow storm couldn't keep friends and family away,
because they all know what your life is worth,
so daughter, this is all I will ever ask of you,
please enjoy your time on this planet earth.

And maybe you don't like Baby Einstein videos,
but I do know you like to play peek a boo,
and just like we said at the very start
Hannah, we are so very proud of you.

And this world can be a traumatic place,
but it also has an enormous beauty to behold,
so we're looking forward to your future stories,
of course, they are as yet unwritten and untold.

But just know we'll be with you all the way,
we'll teach you right from wrong (the best that we can),
and we'll always be there to watch out for you,
just in case life doesn't exactly go to plan.

Because unfortunately it's not always that easy,
and you have to deal with just what comes,
but all I know is that I've been truly blessed,
I have a beautiful daughter and one of the world's best Moms.

And I see so much of your mother in you,
and all I can do is smile and thank the Lord above,
because I know I've been blessed to have you both in life
and all I will ever need is that wondrous love.

Finally, there is just one thing to add,
and it's the best word I've ever heard
because if you weren't here with us today,
we would never have nicknamed you 'Bird'.

Because you are indeed our wonderful bird,
you make our hearts sing, they literally soar,
and we just wanted to say that we love you,
I guess that's really what these words are for.
