left Sweden, their native land, with all the endearments of home and kindred, and founded BISHOP HILL COLONY on the uninhabitable prairies of ILLINOIS.

Bishop Hill Descendants

Though many colonists died during the cholera epidemic that swept through Bishop Hill, more immigrants arrived aboard The Charlotte the second year. Among these immigrants was Catherina Wilhelmina Petronella Skoglund and her infant nephew Jonas Olsson. Catherina was the half-sister of the wife of Olof Olsson, the man who first established the colony. The Olsson's had left their tiny new-born infant in Catherina's care until he would be strong enough to make the perilous sea crossing.
Upon arrival, Catherina found that the Olsson's and their other children had died of cholera as did her mother shortly there after.
Catherina later decided to marry Per Dahlgren who had made the crossing with her. Since marriages were not allowed during that time in the colony, the couple and their young nephew, Jonas Olsson, had to flee to Galesburg to be wed.
