Take the Bison Quiz Challenge

Has there ever been a wild animal that captures the imagination like the bison? Perhaps more powerfully than any other living creature, bison embody the majesty of the Great Plains.

Given the current interest in bison conservation and management, we now have an opportunity to make important contributions to the future of this North American icon.

Knowledge is power. I encourage you to take the bison quiz challenge and to apply what you learn in a way that is valuable and meaningful for you. Why not share this educational opportunity with a friend or family member. It's a great way to start conversations that matter about our role as stewards of the land and its remaining treasures.

Population Estimates

The estimates for historical numbers of bison in America vary incredibly (typically from 30 million to 60 million and beyond). Today's scientists and range managers have attempted to zero in on an accurate number by studying the carrying capacity of the grasslands that sustained the bison.

It seems very likely that the high estimates could not have been possible given the actual volume of food that would have been available to early bison herds. A number more in the upper range of 20 million to 30 million seems much more reasonable given what is known about the weather patterns and prairie conditions of those times.

Did you know?

Bison are thought to have rich social relationships. Perhaps the deepest, or longest, relationship is that which exists between a bison cow and her female calf. While a male calf is weaned at six-seven months of age, a female calf may remain with her mother until she herself gives birth for the first time (typically at the age of three).2

Did You Know?

The Flehmen Response in animals is a scenting reaction. The lip is drawn up to help direct molecules to a sensory receiver called the Jacobson's organ. In bison, that organ is in the roof of the mouth. Flehming helps a bison bull determine if a female is in estrus and potentially receptive to breeding.

Speed

Diet

Lifespan

Did You Know?

Bison heifers reach sexual maturity at two years of age. Their first calf is typically born when they are three years of age, after a 9.5 month gestation (approximately 285 days). Normally, healthy and well-nourished bison cows will produce one calf annually over a lifespan of 18-25 years.

Wallowing

Did You Know?

Despite its immense size and weight, a bison can run faster than a horse, turn on a dime, and jump over a six-foot fence. Bison have been observed making six-foot vertical jumps from a stand still. They can also perform impressive horizontal long jumps well in excess of seven feet. Cattle guards won't necessarily keep a bison contained, as they can easily leap over them. Bison are also powerful swimmers.

Predators

Threats

Did You Know?

Bison wallow, rolling on the ground, to give themselves a dust bath. No one knows for sure all of the reasons why bison wallow, but it is presumed from observation that wallowing provides relief from biting insects and parasites. Bulls wallow as a part of their breeding season behavior. Additionally, it is thought that wallowing may provide some relief in hot weather.

Prairie Ecology

Buffalo Meat

Predation

A healthy, full-size bison is not threatened by much. Calves and weakened adults, cows more than bulls, and the old more than the young, are preyed upon by wolves and grizzly bears. A pack of wolves can take down a bison that is not at full strength.

A Healthier Meat Alternative

Bison meat is considered a healthy alternative to other red meats. Bison is much leaner than beef, as well as lower in cholesterol and calories. Bison meat has also been proven to be nutritionally dense with protein and other beneficial minerals.

Annual Bison Roundup

Public buffalo roundups normally occur in the fall. I have listed a couple of state parks that host special events at roundup time. These events provide great photographic opportunities and some allow for volunteer wranglers to participate on horseback. Here is a very brief video of the buffalo roundup at Custer State Park in South Dakota.

Roundup events at Custer State Park take place annually on the last Monday of September. Antelope Island State Park hosted their 2011 roundup on October 28th and 29th. Please see the links provided below for details.

Experience of a Lifetime

Have you ever experienced the thunder of 4,600 bison hooves moving in rhythm to the pounding of your heart? If not, I encourage you to seek out and visit a bison herd. In preparation for publishing this web page, I traveled to the annual bison roundup at Custer State Park in South Dakota.

How to describe what I felt as a herd of 1,200 bison stampeded full speed past the hill where I watched in wonder? The separation between my generation and that of the first nations seemed to disappear. As the bison flowed as one, powerful as a river in springtime, I felt the rush of their energy, and that of those who drew life from the Great Plains.

And then there was the awe. Immense and overflowing. I will be entranced and energized by this amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience for the rest of my life.

I have only seen bison is small enclosures with one or two individuals at a time. I hope someday to be able to experience a herd rushing by. What an experience that must have been!
  • ItayasDesigns Mar 16, 2012 @ 2:58 am | delete
Wonderful article! I would love to witness a herd rushing past me one day. I think it was in Dances With Wolves that there is this scene of a thunderous race alongside the buffalo and you could totally feel the rush of the riders on horseback chasing them. I saw the movie in the theater and it felt so familiar like I had been there and witnessed it before. Was a total rush! :)

When my children were young, we took them to Yellowstone. They read that buffalo can run 35 mph. Therefore, every time we started driving the car, they would ask, "Are we up to 36 mph yet?" They were imagining charging bison chasing the car.
  • RinchenChodron Jan 11, 2012 @ 2:32 pm | delete
Yes, they are amazing - about the size of a small car with heads the size of a VW bug. Great quiz - some great photos too.

This study of yours on the Bison is beyond wonderful and I was totally mesmerized as I learned from you once again. You teach as an old soul, so very connected to the bison and to the land....and you do it with an artistic beauty that draws one in. I've already featured this wonderful jewel on my Buffalo Skull From The Badlands and feel that it is an honoring to do so, through you may many stand in awe of the experience of a life time, thank you!

I never realized that bison have no real threats from predators...even historically? I can only imagine it's their large herds, speed, and size which protected them from everything except mankind. Thanks for another informative and fun lens! Beautiful photography as usual. :)

You raise an excellent point here, Jenna. I will clarify the section on predation. And, I should perhaps add a module on the historical dimension. Thanks for your participation and insights. Your comments have contributed to the continual evolution of this lens. Much appreciated!

I had no idea about their speed and agility!
  • RenaissanceWoman2010 Sep 30, 2011 @ 4:40 pm | delete
I think that fact surprises most individuals. You wouldn't expect any animal as large as a bison to be so nimble. They are powerfully graceful.
  • CruiseReady Sep 29, 2011 @ 7:42 am | delete
I had no idea they were known for their agility. That's very cool.

What a wonderful lens! Blessed by a Squid Angel 9/28/11. It is informational, attractive, and interactive. I didn't know that they could run that fast. I'll never forget seeing bison for the first time in the wild, in northern British Columbia along the Alaska Highway.
  • RenaissanceWoman2010 Sep 29, 2011 @ 5:21 pm | delete
If you check out the bison videos on YouTube, you will notice that you are not the only one who was surprised at their speed. Many individuals who ignored the warning signs about not approaching bison learned the hard way just how quickly they can move. Your visit and blessing are greatly appreciated. Thank you!
  • Koupie Sep 28, 2011 @ 5:56 pm | delete
The Flehming is interesting, and that is a wonderful shot you took, you are an amazing photographer :) I did get about 40% of the quiz, thanks for the education on Bison, I never realized how beautiful they really are until now.

Glad you found the quiz educational and interesting. Thank you for the very generous comment about my photography. I agree with you about the beauty of bison. They are awesome. Really appreciate your visit and participation.
