What Is Bisquick?

Bisquick is a pre-mixed baking product sold by General Mills under their Betty Crocker brand, consisting of flour, shortening, salt, and baking powder (a leavening agent). According to General Mills, Bisquick was born when one of their sales executives met a train dining car chef in 1930 who mixed lard and the dry ingredients for biscuits ahead of time. The recipe was adapted, using hydrogenated oil, thus eliminating the need for refrigeration (Sesame oil was originally used as a preservative, identified on the box as "Ingredient S" over the years), and officially introduced on grocers' shelves in 1931. Originally intended for making biscuits very quickly, Bisquick can be used to make a wide variety of baked goods from pizza dough to pancakes to dumplings to snicker-doodle cookies.

Biscuit Making Tips

Leave some space, an inch or two, around the biscuits on the cookie sheet. They'll heat more evenly and cook better.

1 point

For added richness and more compliments, cut 1/3 cup of butter and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda into Bisquick before adding milk.

0 points

In a pinch, a straight-sided plastic glass can also substitute for a rolling pin.

0 points

For a crunchy top, skip the kneading and rolling and drop biscuit-sized spoonfuls directly onto the baking sheet.

0 points

Loosen the freshly baked biscuits from the tray with a spatula so they don't stick.

0 points

If there are leftovers, allow them to cool, then store them at room temperature in an airtight bag or container.

0 points

Count to ten; kneading biscuit dough too much can make biscuits tough.

0 points

If you don't have a biscuit cutter, either use a knife to cut squares or cut rounds with an upside-down drinking glass. A little flour or extra Bisquick on the knife or glass will help keep things from sticking.
