On Guard

The guard is the essence of BJJ. Everyone can fight from a dominant position, but you truly know jiu-jitsu when you can succeed in what has traditionally been viewed as an inferior position: fighting off your back.

I love the guard. I love the sweeps, the subs, and the pure craftiness of defeating an opponent from underneath.

The following are some techniques from a few of my favorite guards.

Hip Movement

Let's warm up with some fundamentals

Proper hip movement in BJJ

The importance of proper hip movement. Although parts may look similar, this is NOT the "Mount Escape Drill".

The Turtle Guard "Vever Get Tapped from the Bottom Again" (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu)

Is the turtle position really a "guard"? That's debatable. What's not, is that this position flows seamlessly into the guard game, and without it you've got weak link.
