Iyengar Yoga: Asana for the Soul

Ranked #6,513 in Sports & Recreation, #173,076 overall

Connecting Body and Energy

B.K.S. Iyengar's book, Light on Life, was such an inspiration to me as a yoga student. Iyengar highlights how the yoga student can incorporate Patanjali's principles from the Yoga Sutras, how to practice from a deeper space than the physical body, and how the body's energy, Prana, is directed by the movement and alignment of the yoga posture.

This lens will cover who B.K.S. Iyengar is, what makes his yoga style different, and how that is important to the yoga practitioner.

Who is B.K.S. Iyengar?

Student of Krishnamacharya & Founder of Iyengar Yoga

B.K.S. Iyengar is the founder of Iyengar Yoga. He began studying yoga very early in his childhood under the tutelage of his brother-in-law, Sri Krishnamacharya. Iyengar studied along other yoga gurus such as T.K.V. Desikachar (founder of viniyoga) and Indra Devi the first woman to achieve notoriety for studying and teaching yoga. Iyengar is still alive and has been practicing yoga for over 60 years! His books have been the premiere resource for proper yoga posture alignment, breathing techniques, and energizing prana.

"It can be said that Mr Iyengar is therefore one of the premier Yogis responsible for introducing yoga to the West and Iyengar style yoga is probably the most widely practiced form of yoga in Europe and America today."

Iyengar's Light on Life

A Look at the Spiritual Aspects of Yoga

Light on Life: The Yoga Journey to Wholeness, Inner Peace, and Ultimate Freedom

Amazon Price: $9.03 (as of 02/16/2012)Buy Now

The 86-year-old teacher here expounds the philosophy of yoga-its metaphysics, of which yoga poses, or asanas, represent the physical component. Iyengar yoga is vigorous because it involves the body, mind and spirit, and the master explains those interrelationships clearly. Chapters elaborate on aspects of yoga-the physical, energetic, mental, intellectual and divine, showing the architecture of the comprehensive system of spiritual teachings that lead to samadhi, the state of blissful absorption. Yoga is about health and purity, flexibility and divinity. While this book underlines the intellectual aspect of yoga, it is insufficient for a new yoga student, no substitute for yoga sadhana, practice that requires and integrates body and mind. Not the book with which to begin the yoga journey, it is highly recommended for those advanced on the path and interested in learning from a master of flexibility and wisdom.

What is the Iyengar Yoga Style Like?

Embodying the Patanjali's Yoga Sutras into Yoga Practice

Iyengar built his style of teaching to encompass the guidance from the great historical yoga text, the Yoga Sutras, written by Patanjali. These sutras were written somewhere between 5000 B.C. and 300 A.D. Yoga has been around for thousands of years! The Yoga Sutras highlight the path to enlightenment and freedom through the Eight Limbs of Yoga. These eight limbs highlight physical postures, moral and ethical observances, breathing techniques, and meditation techniques to bring one to personal liberation.

This valuable book provides a complete manual for the study and practice of Raja Yoga, the path of concentration and meditation. This new deluxe printing of these timeless teachings is a treasure to be read and referred to again and again by seekers treading the spiritual path. The classic Sutras (thought-threads), at least 4,000 years old, cover the yogic teachings on ethics, meditation, and physical postures, and provide directions for dealing with situations in daily life. The Sutras are presented here in the purest form, with the original Sanskrit and with translation, transliteration, and commentary by Sri Swami Satchidananda, one of the most respected and revered contemporary Yoga masters. In this classic context, Sri Swamiji offers practical advice based on his own experience for mastering the mind and achieving physical, mental and emotional harmony.

How are Iyengar Yoga Poses Different & Why is That Important?

Proper Asana Alignment to Ensure Safety & Prana Flow

No other Yoga style includes so much focus on the ancient Yogic principles. In conjunction with the Eight Limbs, Iyengar's style focuses on alignment and safety in all postures and asks the practitioner to go beyond "skin deep" in a yoga practice.

From B.K.S. Iyengar's Official Website, these are the key features of his method:

    • Iyengar Yoga can be practiced by all.

    • The emphasis is given to precision and alignment in all postures.

    • The use of self designed props such as wooden gadgets, belts, ropes helps the practitioner to achieve perfection in all the postures.

•The aspect of "sequencing". An "Iyengar Yoga" practitioner is aware of the sequence in which different groups of asanas have to be performed.

My Experience With Iyengar's Writings

How Does a Yogini Bring Iyengar to the Mat?

I encountered Iyengar's book Light on Life when I was in the midst of a particularly frustrating time in my yoga practice. My physical study was really starting to cause severe irritation. I was undergoing a 9 month yoga intensive program and I was convinced I should be further along in my abilities - stronger, more endurance, and able to do some of the much more difficult postures. I would be angrily holding a pose and judging myself the entire time.

I read Light on Life as a part of this intensive training and it changed the entire way I view and experience my own practice! Light on Life describes the 5 kosas (pronounced koshas), or levels, of a yoga practice. Each one deeper than the next. Asana (physical), Prana (energy), Manas (mental), Vijnana (intellectual), and Ananda (divine).

Iyengar encourages each yoga student to truly experience the physical aspect - it is so much more than the muscles! Proper physical alignment (which is often not as far as one might go in a pose) and intense awareness of the body (muscles, bones, skin, hair, etc) will change how the energy can flow through the body and how you feel in that pose! I encourage all yoga enthusiasts to read Iyengar's books to deepen and expand their study!

"I can think of no better book to recommend to a friend beginning to be excited by yoga but bewildered by the plethora of different schools and their sometimes-conflicting teachings. In addition, I would be hard-pressed to think of a book I would recommend more highly to any yoga student seeking to deepen a yoga practice. . . . The great gift of The Heart of Yoga lies not simply in the depth of Desikachar's learning, but in the compassion, gentleness, practicality, and down-to-earth spirit that permeate the book." -- Yoga Journal
