The hilarious TV show Black Books

This fantastic TV series is based in a London bookshop where the owner Bernard Black (played by the wonderful Dylan Moran) plays merry hell with his sidekick, the long-suffering Manny (Bill Bailey) and his long term friend Fran (Tamsin Creig).

Bernard is a drunken, chain-smoking, strangely loveable Irishman who abuses his customers and Manny constantly.  Bernard regards the selling of books as an odious interruption to his life, whilst Manny spends his time trying to improve the shop and the woeful lack of customer service, with various bizarre ideas.

In series I Fran owns the new age shop next-door to Black Books but is an equally reluctant shopkeeper as Bernard and in series II she has closed her shop and is job-hunting with interesting consequences.

A wonderful, escape from reality, must-watch, comedy series!

My Favourite Episode

My favourite episode is in Series 2 when Manny decides to add a coffee shop to Black Books (a la Ottakers) much to Bernards disgust and despite the fact that they have an infestation of some type of creature which is heard but never seen.

Fran meanwhile has been researching her family history and discovered (wrongly) that she is related to an Eastern European family who live around the corner.

Bernard takes the coffee shop idea one step too far by trying to turn it into a restaurant with him as the chef with disastrous results for Fran's 'family' who come in for a meal.

This page, and this show, are really great. Dylan Moran is a true leg-end and the way he delivers his lines is amazing considering that he sometimes has huge monologues to reel off.

    All the best,
    Steve.
