Breathtaking Scenery at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

A recent addition to America's National Park system, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park was designated so in 1999. In southwest of Colorado, the surrounding area has beautiful mountains, hills and spectacular wildlife. The canyon itself an extreme vertical drop, and almost invisible if standing several hundred feet away from it. Only upon stepping foot closer to the canyon would you realize that it is in fact a near 2700 foot drop in some places.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison was carved over time mostly by the Gunnison River. The gneiss rock that makes up the canyon is approximately 1.7 billion years old. That's way before the dinosaurs roamed the earth. My husband and I went to Colorado over the Thanksgiving Holiday, our second trip, and one of the places on our list to visit was Black Canyon. We didn't get there this time, hopefully next time. Colorado is absolutely beautiful with lots to see. I really enjoyed your lens, can't wait for our next trip!

I only recently learned of this park. My husband and I will be going to Colorado quite a bit in the next couple of years as we section-hike the Colorado Trail, so we'll have to make a detour before or after one of our hikes and go check this place out. This is a great lens!

I believe they also had some on Morro Rock in California, and on top of the old shipyard crane in Quincy, MA. They tend to like tall buildings it seems -- they won't be bothered there.

Wow. This is wonderfully packed with all the info I needed to put it on my list of places to see.

Side note about the perigrine; they are beginning to flourish east of the Mississippi River...in cities! Dayton has a few nesting pairs. Seems the skyscrapers are perfect surrogate canyons and there's plenty of pigeons around to feast on.

    Well done.

    Thanks!
