Myth of the Black Cat
Witch hunts were taking place across Europe in an effort to stamp out pagan religions back in the 15th century. Many believed that witches were the caretakers of small animals which included frogs, birds, snakes and cats. Many elderly lived isolated lives, with only a pet cat for company. If that cat was black, then this person was accused of being a witch.
The color black is associated with magic and mystery. It is believed that the witch who owns a black cat, can move freely and unseen in the night. Since the 1880s, the color black has been associated with anarchism. The black cat, in an alert, fighting stance was later adopted as an anarchist symbol.
During witch trials, cats were often tortured and killed by Christian puritans along with the supposed witches. Some thought that witches had the ability to change shape into a cat, others thought that both cats and witches are evil so they must be in cahoots. Many people also think that witches sacrifice cats during their rituals. But the person accuse of being a witch would never harm his or her cat. However, due to communal reinforcement, to this day many animal shelters will not allow the adoption of cats around Halloween for fear of their abuse.
Black cats became a Halloween symbol because it was believed that spirits returned to the world in the body of them.

A black cat can mean either good or bad luck, depending on what part of the world that you live and if you believe in superstition.
Living in the United States or most European countries, a black cat usually means bad luck. Many believe in the superstition that a black cat will cause something bad to happen if it crosses your path. Expect something horrendous to take place. Worse if you cross its path as opposed to it crossing yours. Better to go home, lock your doors and hide under the covers.
Black cats crossing your path from right to left in Germany, means a bad omen and you better watch your step. But from left to right, and the cat is granting favorable times.
In China, many believe these types of cats to be messages of famine and poverty.
In Italy there are those that believe that if a black cat lies on a sick person's bed, death will follow.
The superstition in most parts of the world it is thought that a black cat walking towards you will bring good luck. Should the cat stop and turn away, before it reaches you, be careful, it won't be a time to take any risks for good luck will not be on your side!
If however you live in the United Kingdom, or in Japan, black cats crossing your path will be the sign of good fortune.
In Scotland, a strange black cat on your porch is a sign of upcoming prosperity.
Latvian farmers that find black kittens in their grain silos are grateful, for they believe this is a sign of a good harvest.
Finding a single white hair on even the blackest of cats is a good sign. But you must pull out that hair, without getting a scratch, and yours will be a long, happy and healthy marriage.
The Celts thought black cats were reincarnated beings able to divine the future.

- This was a very interesting read. I enjoyed the superstitions and although my grandmother was very superstitious(and it rubbed off a little) I still would like to believe that black-kittys bring good lucK.

- I love black and I love cats, so it follows that I love black cats. Superstitions are often so silly. I hated reading the the cats were tortured and killed. Ridiculous and awful.

- Sandy, I don't know if you had seen a picture I posted -- somewhere -- that shows two cats on the roof of our screen patio. One was a black cat. And, it was Halloween a few years ago! Was a pretty strange coincidence to see that black cat up there -- and it hung around for most of Halloween night! Black cats are beautiful -- I am the caretaker to several.
