Buying a Black Cloche Hat

Cloche Hat - The Hat of a 1920s Flapper

The cloche hat first appeared in 1908 and went out of fashion 25 years later in the early 1930s but the cloche is really associated with the 1920s style of the Flapper. The photo from 1927 is a good example. The cloche is a bell-shaped hat which fits closely. It's usually made of a soft material like felt or linen so that it is obvious that it has fitted snugly. As part of this, it is also pulled down and should sit just above the brown line. (The 1920s brow line was often a high, thin arch done outlined in pencil.)

Felt Cloche

Felt was the traditional material for cloche hats for day wear during the 1920s. Felt can look incredibly stylish if the hat is well-made and has a good shape. (I remember seeing some great felt hats when I visited Tallinn in Estonia.) On the other hand, if the hat is poorly made and doesn't have a good shape, then it can look very bad indeed. Were I to buy one, I'd pay more for quality.

I also think some face shapes are better suited to felt cloches than others. Personally I think felt most suits women with a round, dainty face. Sadly, I don't think my face shape really suits felt - and to be honest black isn't the best colour for me either!

Linen Cloche

Modern linen cloche hats look really authentic and stylish. If you want a casual cloche that many people admire linen might be a good choice for you. Personally, because I have spent time studying the 1920s, I'd prefer beads, felt or velvet.

Black Cloche Hats on eBay

Black cloche hats are hard to find on eBay because for some reason eBay catagorises hats as accessories rather than clothing. Once you know that, then there are usually several current auctions. Here are some of the current ones which have at least 1 bid.

More 1920s Style

The more I write about the 1920s, the more hooked I become. I love the music and the vivacity. I like the floaty women's styles. It was the age of the flapper, the Charleston (dance), the jazz age. Women gained the vote and an independent role in society. To learn more about the style of the 1920s, with links to my other material about he Roaring Twenties, please visits my lens about 1920s style.

Black Vintage Cloche Hats

Vintage cloches on eBay

It's often possible to buy vintage cloche hats in a variety of fabrics, often silk or velvet. I've pulled up some relevant auctions of black cloche hats from the vintage womenswear on eBay. I have seen some really nice, genuine hats on eBay; some which honestly describe themselves as vintage-look (but which are mis-categorised under vintage); and some which claim to be genuine antique cloche hats but honesty don't look genuine to me. Remember, a genuine 1920s hat is likely to cost over $100 and will have some wear. If there is no description of the wear or the hat seems very cheap, then it's reasonable to be suspicious. Remember on eBay: caveat emptor - let the buyer beware.
