Black Dirt Region Farming in Pine Island Warwick New York - Potato and Onion Farming Wineries Orchards

Pine Island is a beautiful hamlet of Warwick, New York. It is a great place to visit anytime, but on cool fall-like days it is a perfect day-trip destination as the potato and onion harvests are taking place and the produce stands are loaded with crops grown in the fertile black soil.

There are also wineries and orchards nearby for apple picking; and the corn, squash and pumpkins have been or are being harvested. The unique black soil makes for superior root crops, especially the onions and potatoes the black dirt region is known for.

Warwick New York's Pine Island Onion Festival and Root Crops

What Grows in that Rich Black Soil?

Pine Island is credited with providing 30% of the onions harvested in the United States. Visit the calendar for the date of the annual Onion Festival in September. When we were driving through the region in September, many root crops had already been harvested. This made it possible to view just how black the soil is.

All over for as far as the eye could see in some places there were onions laying on the surface of the soil. They apparently had been unearthed by machine, and were waiting to be picked up and packed.

We also saw winter squash in another field, and some potatoes. Corn, pumpkins, and many other things grow in the rich soil, but Pine Island is best known for their onions, which we saw in abundance.

Why is the Pine Island Soil Black?

The soil is as black as this box because it is formed in an ancient glacial lake bottom augmented by decades of past flooding of the Wallkill River

Have you ever visited or lived in the Pine Island Region?

Guestbook - say hello!

Awesome! I actually grew up and still have family about 10 minutes outside of Pine Island...it's a lovely area and the Warwick Valley Winery and Demarest Hill Winery are fun to visit, and Warwick has lots of cute shops and restaurants. I still miss the old Jolly Onion Inn, however! That used to be the best place for "finer dining" in the area in a charming country restaurant.

Thanks for visiting! I've been to each place you mentioned...we went to the Jolly Onion restaurant a few years back, but the last time we were there and thought of going, found that it had closed down. Yes, disappointing, had a hard time finding anywhere better. Maybe I should put a "yelp" module on the page and see if people in the area have opinions about places to eat. Late summer to Fall is our favorite time to visit the area.

Thank you for introducing me to this wonderful farming area. Usually when I think New York area I think of the big city New York and cannot imagine that it is also rich country land too.

I had no idea this geologic region was nearby ... our daughter has an organic farm homestead just over the NY border in upstate PA.
