Black-Eyed Susan Book Award

The Black-Eyed Susan Book Award program was created to promote reading and literacy for Maryland children. The award honors outstanding books chosen by students in Maryland. Awards are given for books in four categories: picture book, grades 4-6, grades 6-9, and high school.

2010-2011 Black-Eyed Susan Book Award nominees have been announced

The 2010 Black-Eyed Susan Book Award nominees have been announced. The most up-to-date information regarding this award can be found on the Maryland Association of School Librarians website.

Please note that the deadline to vote in 2011 is no later than April 25, 2011.

Cast Your Official Vote

.. ahem... help select the winner.

It's easy to help pick a winner.

1. To vote in the Picture Book category, you must read 8 of the 15 nominated books.

2. To vote in any other category, you must read at least 3 of the nominated books.

3. Cast you vote in any Maryland Public Library. Every child gets one vote in each category.

4. Votes at each location are tallied and sent to the Black-Eyed Susan Book Awards Committee to be counted.

5. Typically, votes are due in the month of April.

See any Maryland librarian for details.

What Does the Winner Get?

The winning authors and/or illustrators receive a pewter plate engraved with the year and the Black-Eyed Susan Book Award logo. Authors, illustrators and publishers recognize the Black-Eyed Susan Book Award as an honor bestowed by Maryland students.

Which Books are Eligible for the Black-Eyed Susan Award?

Committees of school library media specialists and other interested persons meet over the course of a year to determine which books will go on the lists; anyone is invited to suggest titles. Following are some of the criteria:

Books may be fiction or nonfiction.

Books must have a copyright date of the current year or one of the preceding three years and be listed in the current Books in Print.

Each title selected will have received positive reviews from appropriate professional journals.

Members of the committee will read and discuss the submitted books and choose the best books to be placed on the list.
