Black Forest Cuckoos, fairy tales, foods & nutcrackers were my very first inkling that the world was much larger than I knew as a tiny child. From Grimm's Black Forest fairy tales, to Disney's Pinocchio, I began my learning of the greater wide world, and received a sense of an interesting heritage.

Lodge Decor from the Deep Forest
Cuckoos developed during an age when there was little in 'outside' entertainment as we have it, of course. Born in the deep woods by a hunting people, it was a stroke of genius to develop an animating way of counting time. These clocks have astonishing details: deer or elk, birds of many types, waterwheels, dancers, roof shingles, the list is only limited by the wood carver's imagination. During the deep winter, when everyone was snowed in, the men would spend their time carving clocks in the most beautiful and intricate designs they could think of. In the spring, when the community could more easily meet up again, they would have contests to see which crafter had carved the best, most beautiful, most intricate clock that past winter.Families were entertained by the movements every hour of the cuckoos, the dancers, the movements of the wooden characters. These were useful and important pieces to have in a Black Forest chalet.

1. Remember to wind the clock at least every 8 days by holding a weight in one hand and pull chain with the other. Pulling the chain without holding the weight is not recommended.
2. NEVER turn clock upside down - this may cause internal components to get out of sync.

- We have a very old Black Forest Cuckoo so I found this lens very interesting. I got here through the Squidoo Search Engine. I was searching to see if anyone had made a lens about Christian Ulbricht Nutcrackers which we have a collection of. Your lens came up and I am so glad it did. I think that Christian Ulbricht Nutcrackers will be my next lens since I did not see where anyone had done that.
