Just what is Black Friday?
What kind of deals drive millions of people to shop on the Friday after Thanksgiving? What is it that makes folks get up at 4am to shop?
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and the unofficial beginning of Christmas Shopping (even though Christmas displays and merchandise have been up since they took down Halloween stuff). Retailers traditionally offer big sales (called doorbusters) that only last a few hours (or until the items are gone which is what usually happens first) and begin at 5 or 6 am.
Myself, I try and get my shopping done before Thanksgiving. What I don't have by then I usually order online because the crowds and traffic are just too much.

Top 10 Tips for Black Friday Shopping
If you are crazy enough to shop the day after Thanksgiving, here are some tips to make it a bit easier.- Check out the Black Friday Ads early at the sites listed below. You can then research your gift ideas and create your list accordingly.
- Shop with a group of friends. You can split up and go to different stores and by using cell phones get items on each others' lists to save time.
- Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. You'll be putting on a lot of miles so you might as well stay comfy.
- Make a list of the stores you will be going to and map out your plan of attack for the order you will go to the necessary stores.
- Yes, the early bird (or shopper in this case) gets the worm, but it is not the only worm. Early bird specials tend to bring out the masses and also create the most headaches. If you can live without the combination MP3 player, portable DVD, french fry maker combo for only $9.99 it is best to avoid fighting other shoppers for these deals.
- Get Thyself a Gift Receipt. Gift receipts typically do not list the price you paid so if someone doesn't like (or the gift doesn't fit) the gift they can return or exchange it without knowing how cheap you are.
- Set a shopping budget and then use cash instead of a debit card and especially a credit card. When the cash is gone, the shopping is done. Don't go into debt just to give gifts.
- Some retailers like Wal-Mart have special sales at their online stores. No lines and low shipping costs make this a good deal.
- Bring snacks and water (or coffee if you need the caffeine jolt) to stay fortified for your adventure.
- If all else fails, give out gift cards or shop online :).
