Information, Accessories and Hairstyles For African American Natural Black Hair

The picture to the left is of my daughter. I braided her hair in preparation for swimming in gym class. She and my other daughter are the inspiration for many of the hair styles and journeys that I have taken. My daughters and I have natural hair and I post styles from time to time.

This lens showcases information and accessories that I have found helpful when styling and managing natural hair. Something as simple as hairpins can make natural hair management a lot easier. Banana clips are a blessing. They can hold lots of kinky hair with little or no damage.

My Favorite Leave-in Conditioner

I've tried this leave-in conditioner on my hair and my daughters' hair and it works wonderfully. I usually apply it just after washing and conditioning the hair. I then style as desired. I often style my hair in twists all over. Sometimes my daughters like to blow-dry their hair and wear it straight.

Kim Love posted this conditioner recipe on her YouTube channel, kimmaytube, in May 2010. She is my favorite online hair care resource for natural hair. She knows her stuff and I believe she is coming out with a product line soon. Until then I make up my own using the recipe below.

KIM LOVE'S Recipe
1 oz Knot Today Leave-In (or 2 tablespoons of YOUR preferred leave-in)
2 tablespoons of (Whole leaf version) Aloe Vera Juice with a pH 4.0 or 4.5
2 teaspoons of Castor Oil (Kim Love says: "optional. I sometimes do without it")
2 teaspoons of Jojoba Oil
Mix well.

African American Hairstyle Twist-out

Twist-out: A curly hairstyle that works well with natural hair and will not frizz if done properly. <br />
Instructions--Wash, condition and de-tangle hair. Apply leave-in conditioner. Part into small sections. Take one section at a time and make sure hair is soaking wet. Re-wet section by section if necessary. Apply a small amount of a natural oil to the section (e.g. olive, johoba, coconut). Apply hair gel to the section. Split section into two pieces. Twist the two pieces of together. Repeat with one small section at a time until all hair has been done. Sit under the dryer for about an hour or let air dry for as long as it takes. Undo the twist and do not comb out. You may split each half of the twisted hair once to achieve a fuller look.
