Here are some hair care tips to make sure you maintain a healthy head of hair.

Moisturize Your Hair

Make sure your hair is moisturized. Do a hot oil treatment at least monthly using olive oil. Also make sure you are using conditioner when you wash your hair. African American women should make sure they are oiling their scalp regularly, especially if they are using a relaxer.

Watch Your Ponytail

Avoid Tight Ponytails. Wearing a ponytail everyday is not good for your hairline. This holds true for all months of the year, but you want to be especially careful during the winter months. If you must wear a ponytail, make sure it's not tight. Also be sure to use the right size ponytail holder. Using a ponytail holder that is too small can break your hair off around the crown of your head.

It's in The Water

Use lukewarm water when you wash your hair. Don't use hot water as it can dry out your hair. Also be sure not to wash your hair too frequently. Using too much shampoo can make your hair dry and frizzy.

If You Wear Hats or Wigs

Use a silk scarf if you are going to wear a hat. Also minimize the time you have the hat on. Wearing hats for too long can make your hair greasy and can cause dandruff and itching. The same thing is true for wigs. Be sure to use a dandruff shampoo to control this problem or to make sure that you don't end up with a dandruff problem.

Natural or Relaxed?

There are pros and cons for both wearing your hair naturally and for relaxing it.

Natural Hair
  • It's natural, it's you
  • People may assume you are wearing your hair this way for religious or political reasons
  • Requires a great deal of self confidence as people will ridicule and question your choice
  • Your job may not find your hair fits their "professional standards"
  • It's better for your hair
  • It's easier to self-maintain.

    My Natural Hair Journey

When I decided to go natural, I decided to keep a hair journal. It is current up to May. I figured that it may serve as inspiration to others going natural. Feel free to leave comments and ask questions. *btw sorry about the intro...I didn't know how to remove the first screen that appears*

    Relaxed Hair
  • It's generally what's accepted in the US
  • It's easy to style the hair
  • You should not try to put on a relaxer yourself. You need to go to a stylist which can get expensive.
  • Relaxers are hard on your hair and you must take excellent care to make sure you hair stays healthy.

So much easier to style, a lot more variety. And has taken another source of stress out of my life.
