Black Labrador Retrievers to the Rescue
Ranked #3,063 in Pets & Animals, #77,853 overall | Donates to BuckHawk Center Animal Rescue
Rescuing Black Labs
Easy, I answer. Black Labs get adopted from BuckHawk Center often. In fact, of all the breed varieties that have crossed our door, Labradors seem to be the most popular and Black Labs are the most adopted dog breed we have.
Please don't ask me why. Maybe it's karma, maybe it's fate, maybe its my love of these dogs. What ever the reason, I like it. And I like that the dogs that tend to not get adopted elsewhere do get adopted from BuckHawk Center. So, Black Labrador Retrievers come to the Center and that makes me happy.
So join me on a little tour of our Black Lab community. Meet some of our new ones and find out about some of our adoptions. I promise I won't make it too gushy. Just a little bit.
All About Sawyer
BuckHawk's second Black Lab
His adopters, yes, his adopters, thought he acted like a happy kangaroo when they first took him home. He bounced around their house checking out every room, as if to say, "This is mine. This is my very own home. All of it. All my home to stay forever!" So, Sawyer became 'roo.
Sawyer, aka 'roo came to us by way of a neighboring city pound. One of those animal pounds where he was destined to be put down within 5 days if someone didn't come along and say "Stop. I'll take him." It was the BuckHawk Center that happened to say that. His full "rescue" story is available at Rescue to the Rescue (see link further down on this page). Therefore I won't repeat it here. (You are quite welcome.)
Will You Fall in Love with These Dogs?
What do you predict?
The world of dog adoption nowadays is all about the Web. Every shelter and rescue group has their website showcasing their adoptable dogs. Huge sites like Petfinders and AdoptaPet showcase hundreds of thousands of adoptable dogs from across the country. Picking your new best friend comes, not from your local shelter or humane society, but from pictures and descriptions viewed through your computer screen.
Falling in love with a dog just from a picture is how most of the dogs from the BuckHawk Center are adopted out. Can you pick you new best friend just from a picture? Do you see something in the eyes or expression of that dog that speaks to you?
Add your prediction here, before you even look at the rest of the dogs! Then see if you are right.

BuckHawk predicts:
I predict you will fall in love with these dogs, just from their pictures.

veryirie predicts:
that I will fall in love with these dogs, picture or no picture. How could I not? :)
Meet Moka
Our first female Black Labrador Retriever
Here is Moka, our first female Black Lab. Yes, they do come in both sexes. It was a surprise to me also.
She was one of those "strays." (Definition: a collective term used by anybody, especially those wanting to get rid of a pet they no longer want, to mean dogs of an unknown background, or a known background, but the humans do not want to admit it.)
Moka's story goes like this. Call from local resident: Someone dumped this dog in our backyard and we can't keep her. She's really friendly and sweet, but we just can't afford to feed her. Response from me: We are full. Actually over-capacity. Response from caller: If you can't take her, we'll just have to shoot her. Response from me: (after praying someone shoots them) Fine, where do I pick her up? Caller, again: Oh no, we'll bring her to you.
Now, that was my indication that they had most likely gotten her as a puppy. Now that she had grown into her size, but hadn't grown out of her puppyhood (very typical of Labs) she had become too much to handle. The most familiar story I've heard in all my years of animal rescue.
Moka is really one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met. At about a year old, she is truly still a puppy. But, she's also not a pure Lab. Another very common tale in my line of work. This picture makes her look quite calm. But, that only happens when she has a full tummy (which is the case in this photo) or when she has tired from a great play session.
Moka Recommends A Pretty Collar
It makes her feel special
Did You Know?
Black Labrador Retrievers have their origins in Newfoundland, Canada.
How's Your Patience?
Can you raise a puppy?
Puppies are so cute and adorable. Especially Lab puppies. But, within a few months, they are no longer cute and little. They become large puppies! It takes a lot of patience, born from love, to raise a Lab puppy, or any large breed puppy.
Do you have the patience to raise a large dog from puppyhood?

Oh, yes! I want to start with a puppy so I know they are being raised properly.
YourIslandRoutes says:
I've survived a Lab/Golden mix who tested me for 3 years then became a wonderful dog. I am now working with a Jack Russell Terrier. She's a year and a half and coming around. I don't know if I'll have any patience left after this. LOL Thank goodness I was born with a healthy dose of persistence.
TheresaMarkham says:
Yep - doing it now! Rottie/Shepherd mix - age 4 1/2 months :)
No, thanks! Give me an adult dog who is past all the trying puppy stuff.
veryirie says:
I will take any dog and love them, but I especially love the teens and the older senior dogs. :)
rwoman says:
Our first black lab (we are on our third!) we raised from puppyhood and that was great, our second we adopted as an older dog and he was a bit of trouble, our third we adopted as a youngster (age 2). He was a rescue but was a good choice because we don't have the time for training from scratch plus he is really my son's dog and adopting a full-grown dog meant they could start right out playing fetch and running around together.
Meet Sonny, A Wonderful Black Labrador Retriever
He hasn't developed his "Lab" chest, yet
This is Sonny. He is a most recent addition to our Center, but a very welcome one. He is also about a year old, also mixed with some unknown other breed and also a large puppy. Sonny came to us by way of another shelter. His history may say stray, but he is showing us some of that history by way of his behavior.
There is evidence that Sonny suffered some abuse in his past. He tends to cower when we reach a hand out to pet him. This behavior is not new to us. Nor is the "cure." But, it takes patience and time. Patience to keep petting him and not give up. Time to show him that human hands will only bring the good stuff.
The shelter where I picked him up is located about an hour from the BuckHawk Center. We put him in the backseat where he stayed for about 2.4 seconds. Then he joined me in the front seat and curled up for the drive. I've seen the eyes of many dogs and many have touched my soul. Sonny was one of those. His eyes told me he was unsure if I would allow this change in position, but when I didn't get mad, try to force him to the back or do anything other than talk to him, his eyes said relief.
For the majority of the drive, I had only one hand on the wheel. The other hand was buried in Sonny's luxuious fur. At first, he cowered. Then relaxed. By the half-way point in the journey, he had his head in my lap. Sonny and I had made our connection.

Meet Morton, An Owner Surrender
It's rare, but it does happen
This is Morton. He's a 2 year old Black Labrador Retriever. And his humans surrendered him. Not very often, but sometimes, the owners actually admit that they have to give up their dog. In Morton's case, it's because he was just too much to handle. Wow, big surprise.
Morton also comes from another rescue group, where he had to be separated from all other dogs because he was too rough with them. Well, duh. Any dog that size needs lots of exercise. A 10x10 kennel is just not enough room. At BuckHawk Center, Morton has a play yard that's 50 feet long and 30 feet wide. And he plays beautifully with other dogs, when they all have the room to run and romp and wear off their extra energy.
He may be 2 years old, but he's still a puppy. And that puppyhood will most likely continue for another year. Wonderful, happy Morton is the victim of just being himself.
Morton Recommends Big Dog Beds
For big dogs, of course.

- hahaha I had to laugh at your reaction to the people calling about the dog who was "dumped" in their yard. I think I would have reacted exactly the same. So happy to read all these beautiful dogs found forever homes. :) Yay!

- I really enjoyed reading your lens. It highlights the importance of pausing to think before taking the 'cute' puppy home only to lose interest when the 'cuteness' wears off.
Thank God for for the people at BuckHawk

- Your lens is wonderful! I had a yellow Lab/Golden mix who died in 2009. She tried every ounce of patience I had the first 3 years. Then she turned into this wonderful, even tempered companion who loved people. Thank you for sharing these dogs' story. It was very moving!

- I just love labs (as I said, we are on our third). Our most recent was adopted through Kentucky Lab Rescue and I have recommended them to everyone I know who even looks like they are thinking about getting a dog. I think labs are wonderful dogs -- so sweet and gentle and fun loving. We have lots of labs in our extended family although I must admit we are partial to black labs. Our most recent is: http://www.squidoo.com/meet-the-maxinator

- Wonderful stories about your Black Labs. They are beautiful dogs. Several years, while in Georgia, a friend of ours got divorced and his ex got their cute Peke, Dixie, in the divorce settlement. :) Our friend decided to get his own dog - a Black Labrador he named 'Mason' (Mason-Dixon Line... LOL). Mason went to Obedience School and turned out to be one of the most well-behaved -- and smartest -- labs I have ever met. Our friend used to come visit us and bring Mason and he (the dog) was one of the nicest house-guests we've ever had! Mason could also 'climb trees' -- sort of. He loved to chase squirrels and if the squirrel went up the tree, Mason would leap and actually hold on to the tree bark several feet up for several seconds. It was amazing! He is a special dog. Hope all YOUR special black labs find perfect 'forever homes'.
