Black Sea: Travels, resources and more

Ranked #11,700 in Travel & Places, #289,566 overall

2011 : Romania, Moldovia, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Turkey, The Balkans.

My most ambitious Black Sea expedition yet will start in late May in Romania, then via Moldovia and Ukraine to Crimea, Georgia,to Turkey- from Trabzon( Trebizond) via Konya to Antalya before returning to the Balkans. This is the latest of a series of visits ..

First was a quick trip in 2006 to Bulgaria and Romania.
a second short trip to Bulgaria took me to th Pirin mountains, Rila monastry and back to the ancient Grek settlement of Sozopol..
2008 from Galati in Romania, to the Ukraine via Odessa to the Crimea
In 2010 I didn't see the Black Sea but was almost at the coast in the Danube Delta at Solina in Romania, having come via Rzezow in E Poland, Lvov and Mara Mures, and continuing on to the Iron Gates gorge of the Danube and up to Belgrade.
This lens contains preparations for this summer's trip . .notes and links..
A companion lens is Travel Diaries
This lens will grow to describe this and previous trips and to provide links to relevant practical and cultural resources ..
My actual travel blog for this trip will be at Ice Factory. .the actual link will be here shortly.
Eager to get quickly to Georgia I'm looking into the possibility of a ferry from Varna, or perhaps Odessa, rather than Kerch as originally planned. Varna/ Odessa departures to Georgia are fine but I've found today that Kerch-> Poti is only for freight, so the Crimea section of my trip will be ditched this time, though I'll continue to develop the Ukraine section of this lens.

The Black Sea: histories, myths, legends

...

Perhaps the Black Sea basin was the site of Atlantis, submerged when the Mediterranean poured through the Bosphorus. .
Georgia has been identified with Colchis where Jason and the Argonauts journeyed in search of the Golden Fleece, and where Medea dismembered her children.
I've discovered that in the mountain region of Svaneti the technique of using a sheep fleece to pan for gold is still extant . .

Romania

2011

T. Mures. I shall arrive here from London with WizzAir. The flight with transfers cost only £40 pounds.
I passed through what looked a pleasant unspoilt little town en route to Cluj Napoca on my first visit to Romania. The name means market on the Mures river.
Sibiu http://www.romaniatourism.com/sibiu.html
One of the Siebenburgen( 7 towns of Saxon Transylvania
Fagaras- the highest range in Romania with many peaks over 2000m, the range is traversed by the grandiose Trans-Fagaras Highway. I'm looking into hiking possibilities
Galati- the easternmost city of the EU, gateway to the Danube delta. Sulina is the last settlement right by the Black Sea, A popular local resort, with riverside promenade, bars and restaurants. Daytrips by boat into the delta, lazing on the beach, which features nighttime discos. The town is reached by boat from Tulcea- try to get the faster one, though either is a lovely trip.

Moldovia

2011

On my first trip to the Crimea, I entered Moldovia to Cahul where helpful locals, the first of many, changed a bit of money and showed me the minibus to Chisinau, where I stayed overnight in the giant hotel Cosmos, which I shall avoid in future, a it was a throwback to an earlier( Soviet) era. Got a good picnic in the central market, before continuing to Odessa on a local bus the next day. It was the first year in which EU nationals were allowed visa-free entry so the rural fontier control was perplexed and had to call Kiev. Back on the bus all were most forbearing.
Monastery stays- Moldovia is dotted with monasteries, many ancient and in beautiful country, where they offer the best or only accomodation.
