- I loved Black Swan! I did notice you left out the nail polish she used in film - the pretty, soft pink one. It's by Zoya, and is called Bela. I bought it and I love it. The makeup in the film was phenomenal. Your lens is really helpful. Great job!

- Awesome write-up!! (Good movie too!) This page was truly inspirational. Everything from sewing the tutu (which I did - but my own way) to lacing up your ballet slippers and tying up your hair. Very thorough. I love how you have provided so many different options. I liked the idea of using a mask instead of the makeup, I chose one similar to the last one on your list with large black ostrich plumes. I ended up putting together my own interpretation, an absolutely smashing Black Swan costume, winning two costume contests, and this article is partly to blame! ;) I absolutely love how the Black Swan is both feminine and dark. My favourite Halloween costume yet. (How will I top this next year?! haha)
My version of the Black Swan:
Masquerade Mask, black with glitter and large black ostrich plumes
Decorative black choaker
Black leotard with feathers, decorations and 'jewels'
Shiny black vinyl waist-cincher
Black tutu, handmade, with jewels and a TON of black feathers, especially at the waist
Traditional pink tights
Black (soft) leather ballet slippers with black ribbons (love the contrast with the pink legs!)
Big black feathered wings
Would love to send you a picture?
Thanks WordCustard! :)

Oct 1, 2011 @ 4:09 pm | delete
- Wow this is very thorough. You did a lot of great research into this, and this is exactly what I want to be. However, as a dancer and teacher, I feel I have to friendly caution about going out and buying pointe shoes without proper fitting or ankle strength. Pointe shoes, while beautiful, take a great deal of strength and could really cause injury if not worn and used properly. Also, they are quite costly for a one time wear. I would strongly urge to purchase regular ballet shoes for this outfit. Again, this is the most helpful post I have seen yet for this costume, and you really did a great job. I just don't want anyone to get hurt.

- Thank you so much both for the kind words and more importantly for the benefit of your professional advice. I have now added a warning to this effect to both of the shoe sections and have also mentioned your comment, which I hope people will pay attention to. These are wise words, and I agree, nobody should get hurt for the sake of an outfit. I greatly appreciate your feedback.

- I'm a dancer too..i've been taking dance for 9 years now, not in pointe. Do you think it would be ok if i bought pointe shoes? My friend is taking pointe and she's shown me some stretches in which strengthen my toes. I will begin pointe classes next August.

- Hi Taylor. If in doubt you might be better sticking to regular ballet slippers for now. As a dancer, your feet are precious and the last thing you want to do is damage them. But why not ask your teacher as she will have the best idea of how strong your toes, feet and ankles are?

- Hi:) I'm a pointe dancer:) i would recommend that unless your qualified dance teacher has given you your pointe shoes (becuz you earned them) & fit them to your foot, & broke them for you, you should not wear pointe shoes! You'll brake your ankle or leg if you don't have proper technique! Pointe dancers wear their pointe shoes all the time(all day, except when taking showers) just so they can walk on them for 10 minutes without coming off pointe!! Pointe is hard work! In order to walk on them, you probably have blisters, swelled feet, & bloody toes!Â
I love dance! & embrace the blood, killing feet, & blisters:)! Dance is my life, I wouldn't be able to live if I stopped dancing! I'm going 2 continue 2 dance for the rest of my life!Â
BTW I luv the costume!! Best i've seen yet!!:) very cute & thought threw!! Have a boo-tastic Halloween!

- Thanks for the advice about the pointe shoes. I was going to get them for my costume until I read this. I've never worn them and plan to go out for several hours on Halloween so any uncomfortable shoes are a no-no, let alone some that might break my neck!

- Yes, please look after your feet everyone, this can't be stressed enough. I have a foot injury right now (nothing to do with pointe shoes) and it is both painful and very difficult to get about. Forget partying, it's hard enough to get up the stairs! You can still get a great-looking costume with regular shoes, add ribbons for a fake point shoe look.

- this website really helped me decide what to do about a fancy dress costume for my friends birthday! I've brought a tutu, leotard and white tights from amazon. My shoes came from a highstreet store, outside soft pumps in a nude pink and i had my nan sew ribbons and elastic onto them...now they look like real ballet shoes, plus have all the comfort of a proper sole!

- This reminds me the time I was a ballerina... I really loved it however, I wasn't made for such a "job" as it does require too much focus, daily trainings that last for hours and hours and, more particularly to not eat too much (and I love to eat).
So, one day, I bought everything a ballerina needs, from a tutu to ballet pointe shoes and just danced at home. Now I don't any more but still love and enjoy watching ballets and am fond of ballerina's clothes.
