1992, the HUMMER was introduced as a civilian truck.

1999, AM General and General Motors Corporation finalized an agreement to jointly pursue product, marketing and distribution opportunities for HUMMER.

GM acquired the exclusive ownership of the HUMMER brand name worldwide and the original HUMMER was renamed the HUMMER H1.

2002, AM General opened its new HUMMER H2® Assembly Plant where it assembles SUV and SUT variants of the HUMMER H2, (designed and brought to market by GM).
The new assembley plant is right next to the plant that produces the military Humvee.

2006, AM General and General Motors jointly decided to cease production of the larger HUMMER H1.

The Humvee is the military vehicle, primarily designed to transport personnel and light cargo behind front lines.

The basic vehicle has no armor or protection against nuclear, biological, and chemical threats, however it suffered relatively few losses in conventional operations, such as Desert Storm.

With the onset of urban warfare, the military recognized a need for a more protected vehicle and AM General developed the M1114, an armored HMMWV which could withstand small arms fire. The M1114 has been in limited production since 1996, seeing limited use in the Balkans before deployment to the Middle East.

This design has a larger, more powerful turbocharged engine, air conditioning, a strengthened suspension system and fully armored passenger area protected by hardened steel and bullet-resistant glass.

The HUMMER (H1) that used to be produced by AM General through June of 2006 was the civilian version based on the Humvee.
It was much the same as a Humvee but "civilianized." Since it contained basically the same powertrain and other components found in the Humvee, the HUMMER remained in a category by itself.

The current HUMMER H2, assembled by AM General, is designed to maintain much of the aggressive off-road nature of the original H1 but in a different package, which was designed by General Motors.

It is a large truck (lighter and slightly slimmer than the Hummer H1, while slightly longer and slightly taller) with room for six passengers (including driver). The rearmost part of the H2 SUV was modified to a pickup truck bed for the 2005 H2 SUT ("Sport Utility Truck").
