Where it came from

In 327 B.C. Alexander the Great invaded India and discovered the taste's and flavorings of food. Pepper was one of the most prevalent spices of that time. Since that time, wars have been fought over the shriveled little corn known as peppercorn now. Attila the Hun held Rome hostage and demanded 3000 pounds from the romans as tribute. In mediaeval Europe, Pepper was trade ounce for ounce with gold.
The fruit that is the cause of these kind of acts is produced by a woody evergreen vine with oval, heart shaped leaves, that started out in India. Today it is cultivated in Indonesia, Malaysia, South America and the West Indies as well.
The berry is harvested while still green and then dried until the flesh is wrinkled and has become a black/greyish color. It is then packed or ground in to a fine substance and sold on the world market.

The properties of Pepper

The aromatic, slightly musty smell of the peppercorn comes from the volatile oil in the flesh and skin, the bite comes from the alkaloids (piperine and piperidine) and the resins found in the seeds.

Herbal Healing with Black Pepper

Pepper is found in liniments and gargle's. It is used as a carminative, reducing stomach and intestinal gas, pepper also has been found to stimulate activity of Heart and Kidney.

In Chines Herbal Medicine Black Pepper is known as Hu Jiao. It's hot and pungent properties is valued for stomach ailments. Orally, Black pepper is used for stomach upset, bronchitis, and cancer. White pepper is used orally for stomach upset, malaria, cholera, and cancer.
Topically, Hu Jiao/Black pepper is used for treating neuralgia and scabies. Black and white pepper are also used topically as a counter irritant for pain.
In foods and beverages, black pepper, white pepper, and pepper oil are used as flavoring agents.

Pepper in food will improve digestion and reduce fever.
Piperine is known as a central nervous system depressant and has excellent anticonvulsant and antimicrobial properties.

In Chinese medicine, Pepper is used to treat food poisoning, relieve stomach chills, is used against cholera, is a remedy for dysentery and is also used to stop vomiting caused by hypothermia.

anti-spasmodic
carminative
digestive
diuretic
laxative
stimulant
tonic
