Where did Wii come from?

The working product name for the Wii was Revolution, an apt name considering the sweeping changes the Wii brought to home gaming consoles. Nintendo wanted to get families interested in the console, with games targeted at an audience who would put fun and excitement in game play above state of the art graphics and high speed memory intensive game features.

Why change the name? Nintendo has given a number of different reasons.
Perhaps first, although that is not the place they give it, they thought that Revolution might be difficult to pronounce in some languages, as well as likely to be abbreviated in different forms. Wii is not able to be shortened, although it spawned jokes that Nintendo might not have expected. It is certainly easy to pronounce and remember, and use has given it an emphasis that tells people that the Wii is the game console, not any other word with similar spelling and another meaning.

1) Download the Homebrew software. Place the SD card into your reader and format it. Many netbooks come with SD card readers pre-installed. Copy the homebrew software onto the SD card. Take the SD card out and place it in the Wii SD card slot.

2) Turn on the Wii. The console will ask you if you want to install boot.dol/elf click yes and pay attention to the warning about paying for the software. The console transfers the file into the system storage area. Press one when prompted to do so.

3) The next screen gives the user to install the Homebrew channel, uninstall the homebrew channel, or install software that allows the Wii to play DVDs. You do not need DVD functionality to play the free downloaded games that the Homebrew channel provides.

How it works?

Steps:

1) Remove the SD Card from the Wii. and insert SD Card into Card Reader on your PC.
2) Create a folder called Apps on the Card. This is where free downloaded Wii games from the Homebrew channel placed.
3) Browse the games & software offered by the Homebrew website. Download your favourite and move the compressed folders to the SD card.
4) Use Winzip or a similar program to decompress the folders.
5) Delete the compressed folders and remove the SD card from the reader on your PC.
6) Finally, place the SD card in the Wii and select the Homebrew channel and it's done! The free games that you downloaded for you Wii can be played from this menu.

Do this violate rules and laws?
No, it dont. The Homebrew channel does not break any United States laws, but Nintendo likes the channel slightly less than Microsoft likes Linux and OpenOffice.

How to Download Free Wii Games?

You can also download many older wii games directly onto the console. Some of these games require a certain amount of Wii points while other games can get for free.

Homebrew Channel
Finally, I have explored the mysterious world of Wii Homebrew, in which devoted hackers have created a system that allows gamers to install software such as console emulators and media players onto their Wiis that a user can download some of the open source offerings rival commercial games.

Guitar Fun lets users create their own Rockband and Guitar Hero style tracks. Installing the Homebrew channel requires that the user make changes to the Wii's firmware. These changes invalidate Nintendo's warranty. The lack of a warranty will not be a problem for older Wii owners. Nintendo has made several efforts to stop the system from working on your computer. Systems upgrading to the 4.2 Wii firmware version may find that the console becomes useless if they have the owner has the Homebrew channel installed.

To install the Homebrew channel and download Wii games for free you will need:

An SD Card
An SD Card Reader
Windows, Linux, Mac OS or an operating system capable of supporting the FAT 16 and FAT 32 File Systems.
