Blackadder - the Wibble Scenes

"Goodbyeee", the final episode of the fourth and final series of Blackadder, "Blackadder Goes Forth" is some of the finest television ever, with true black comedy as Blackadder and crew make a final desparate attempt to avoid "going over the top" of the trenches in WW1.

Other than the final scenes, there are no finer than Blackadder's final cunning plan of putting pencils in his nose, his underpants on his head and saying "Wibble" in response to every question.

A Wibbling Plan

One of the most famous lines in Blackadder is Baldrick's signature phrase, "I have a cunning plan."  This time it's Blackadder himself who has a cunning plan.  If he puts pencils in his nose, his underpants on his head and answers "wibble" to every question, then he's convinced his commanding officer, General Melchett, will decide he's insane and send him back home on medical grounds.

George: What's your name?

Blackadder: Wibble.

How Did the War Start?

In a moment of sheer magic, the insanity of war is highlghted by Blackadder, with pencils in his nose and underpants on his head, having a discussion with Baldrick and George on how the war (WW I) started.  For me it's writing on a par with the poems of Sigfried Sassoon.

Excert from Counter-Attack by Siegfried Sassoon (1918)

And he remembered his rifle...rapid fire...
And started blazing wildly...then a bang
Crumpled and spun him sideways, knocked him
out To grunt and wriggle: none heeded him; he choked...

Blackadder, Wibble and Melchett

General Melchett and Captain Darling arrive to investigate.  Blackadder overhears Melchett telling Darling that he had to shoot an entire platoon for putting pencils in their nose, underpants on their head and saying "wibble".  Blackadder pretends that it was a miscommunication and he was just showing Baldrick what not to do.

George: What's two plus two?

Blackder.  Wibble, wibble.

Some people suggest that the www. in web addresses, like in my blogs's address www.kv64.info, should be pronounced, wibble dot.

More Wibble

There's a on article on the BBC web site about the history of wibble, which dates back before Blackadder. Google when I put this lens together was showing an amazing 382,000 matches.
