I have a cunning plan My Lord
Set in medievil England this classic series spawned a comedy legend. Edmund Blackadder.
Edmund the King's youngest son
The founding of a dynasty.
To be honest, I wasn't too keen on the first series The Black Adder. I guess it's always the same with new comedy shows. The writers are finding their feet and the character is less well rounded. Then comes the marvelous episode with the infanta and at last they get it right. From being a plain run of the mill sitcom that would be lucky to see the end of the series, Blackadder begins to shine and has never looked back in my opinionIn aeries 1, Edmund seemed to be more at the mercy of fate than in later series. Less in control of situations. Unless the writers knew what was coming of course.
Baldrick: Why not make her think you prefer the company of men?
Edmund: But I do, Baldrick, I do!
Baldrick: No, no, My Lord. I mean, erm, the, er, intimate company of men...?
Edmund: You don't mean...like the Earl of Doncaster...?
Baldrick: I mean just like the Earl of Doncaster.
Edmund: That great radish? That steaming great left-footer? The Earl of Doncaster, Baldrick, has been riding side-saddle since he was seventeen.
Baldrick: Mm! And who would want to marry the Earl of Doncaster?
Edmund: Well, no-one wou-- (realises) Brilliant! Of course! No- one would marry the Earl of Doncaster! ... except, perhaps, the Duke of Beaufort.
Baldrick
For those who have never seen the show (Why not?) Baldrick in later series acts as the dumb sidekick. The perfect foil to Blackadder's wit and humour. Although there are elements of the future Baldrick in the first series, to me Baldrick is just a little too smart. The now classic phrase "I have a cunning plan" actually meant something that may have a chance of succeeding.Baldrick: My God, what's happened to your neck?
Edmund: Erm, er, well, well, well, well, they're love bites, actually!
Baldrick: Look more like dog bites to me.
Edmund: Well, yes, yes, she was, erm, a bit of an animal!
The King
Brian Blessed
Edmund's father (?)It doesn't matter where Brian is in the entertainment world, from Fancy Smith in Z Cars, (A British Cop show from the 60's) to the King in Blackadder, Brian Blessed always brings a certain something to every role he takes on.
One of the true stars of the series.
King: Chiswick, remind me to send flowers to the King of France in sympathy for the death of his son.
Chiswick: The one you had murdered, My Lord...
King: Yes, that's the fellow.
The Infanta
Edmund's future bride. In the episode "The Queen of Spain's Beard," Edmund is betrothed to seal a political alliance. The betrothal is to the Infanta. The daughter of the King of Spain.Played by the wonderful Miriam Margolyes this episode lit up the whole series and from that moment Blackadder became a legend.
Infanta: Tu nariz mas pequen~a que yo esperara.
Don: Your nose is smaller than I expected.
Edmund: I have suffered no similar disappointment.
