Who hasn't wanted to watch TV on their mobile phone? If you've tried Googling it then you know its out their but not one website seems to know the specifics. After running into obstacle after obstacle I realized that as soon as I figured this thing out I HAD to share it. Hope this helps the non-geekafiles out there. If this information helped you please take the time to sign up with squidoo so you can rate this page, otherwise I don't know if this is helping anyone.

Important Info

  1. Your Blackberry must be an 8700 for this to work.
  2. You must have the Blackberry Internet service add on to download and run the mobile tv software.
  3. The CanWest Mobile Video Player has just come out of beta!!
  4. The only clips available will be news stories such as current events and sports, but with a Canadian twist.

Download the Mobile Video Player

CanWest Mediaworks Player Using Sona Mobile Technology

The first thing you need to do is download the CanWest Mobile Video Player for Blackberry. Enter this URL into the browser:

http://video.sonamobile.net/ota2

This will automatically download and install the player into your BlackBerry and a new icon will appear on your homescreen.

IF THE LINK DOES NOT WORK!
Some people have messaged me and told me that going directly to the link does not always work for them. You may have to go to the canwest bbtv site and request to be sent a download link. Go to www.bbtv.ca with a desktop computer. T-Mobile users will need to click on the "go" button under where it says "if you are a telus subscriber click here". Fill in the form and use an email address that gets sent to your blackberry. Click on the link that they send you and voila!

If you've been to this lense before the old link for the beta trial was http://video.sonamobile.net/ota, but as far as I know the link no longer works so use the new one.

javascript: could not open tunnel error

So close and yet so far....

This was a problem that was associated with the beta version of the software and should be fixed now. If you are still having problems this may help you:
>>Click on Options
>>Click on Advanced Options
>>Click on TCP
>>Under APN ender: wap.voicestream.com

All of these steps worked for me with T-Mobile USA on a Blackberry 8700g.

Review of the Software

The audio quality during TV playback is MUCH better than I would have thought and can reach volume levels that are uncomfortable to the ear. The video quality depends a lot on how much motion is going on in the scene in question. If there is a lot of action the resolution goes down and the images appear choppy, but for the most part the frame rate is fairly decent. It is also hard to find fault with a free service.

How Can This Be Free?

A good question

During the beta program it was a little unclear as to how CanWest was going to fund all of this, but now with the release of a full version the business model has come into focus. At the beginning of each clip a short ad displays a company or product name, but fortunately for those of you who aren't on the high speed edge network these ads are very short in duration and usually just fly by at the beginning of each clip.

Where to get new videos?

I've already downloaded everything I could get my hands on.

As far as I know you can't download other videos and upload them to your blackberry. Canwest updates the content that is available to download about once a week (sometimes longer). Recently they've added some other types of clips other than news stories.
