WELCOME....
We like our coffee in its regular not unleaded form. Straight black and piping hot keeps us happy.
Our intent is to try coffees offered by restaurants, fast food chains, and specialty coffee houses and post our thoughts about them.
That said, we want to invite others to join us on our quest to taste different black coffees and rate them using a simple scale: "Good", "It'll Do", and "Bad".
- A "Good" cup of coffee tastes freshly brewed and has no bitter aftertaste.
- "It'll Do" satisfies the coffee urge but just does not make the grade of a "Good" cup of coffee.
- And, a "Bad" cup of coffee is stale with an aftertaste that requires another beverage to wash it away.

McDonalds
Rating: "Good"
We really like the Golden Arches' offering of black coffee. Yes, we understand they were sued for brewing their coffee too hot. Yes, there are other places to go for java. Yes, there other "fancier" places to go. But, who can pass up a piping hot brew from McDonalds. More important, regardless of where you are in the country or the world, the coffee tastes just as good anywhere!1 point
Escape' (Local Coffee House)
Rating: "Good"
Stopped by Escape', a local coffee house in Allen, Texas. Tried a fresh brew of their black coffee and was pleased. Added a maple icing donut for a late afternoon pick me up on a cold day!1 point
Chick-Fil-A
Rating: Good"
Another tasty brew from a fast food chain. Add a Fundge Brownie and you have the perfect breakfast of champions!0 points
Jack In The Box
Rating: "Good"
A trend in the making with another fast food chain's brew rated high on the "Black Coffee List".0 points
Starbucks
Rating: "Good"
First specialty coffee house to make the list although it is a national chain. Strong and bold taste, just be sure its fresh/recently brewed, else expect an aftertaste.0 points
Seattle's Best Coffee
Rating: "Good"
Another specialty coffee house that is also a national chain. Similar to Starbucks, main difference is do you like drinking coffee at Borders Bookstore or Barnes and Noble.0 points
Burger King
Rating: "It'll Do"
Burger King's brew just does not make the "Good" rating but it will do in a pinch. Just be sure to order a breakfast meal to help it along its way.0 points
Whataburger
Rating: "Bad"
Jury is out on this one or may be it was a bad brew, but so far have not had a good experience with Whataburger's black coffee. Will readdress the rating next round, till then rating stays "as is"!0 points
7-11 Convenience Stores
Rating: "It'll Do"
Coffee ranges from "It'll Do" to "Bad". But, going with the assumption of freshly brewed or recently brewed, then 7-11's wide selection of coffees is rated as "It'll Do". However, coffee drinkers beware as the "It'll Do" rating quickly drops to "Bad" when the coffee sits too long on the burner. So, as a rule of thumb, choose the pot that is directly under the brewer. It is usually the most recently brewed pot.0 points
International House of Pancakes
Rating: "It'll Do"
Like 7-11, IHOP's coffee ranges from "It'll Do" to "Bad". Sticking with the assumption of freshly brewed or recently brewed, IHOP's coffee is rated as "It'll Do". But, be prepared to ask for a fresh brew; you will quickly know when the coffee sat too long on the burner!0 points
Denny's
Rating: "It'll Do"
Like 7-11 and IHOP, Denny's coffee also ranges from "It'll Do" to "Bad". On the same assumption of freshly brewed or recently brewed, Denny's coffee is rated as "It'll Do". And as noted earlier, be prepared to ask for a fresh brew if the coffee sat too long on the burner!0 points
Love's Truck Stop (Atoka, OK)
Rating: "Good"
Was on the road and stopped at Love's Truck Stop in Atoka, Oklahoma. Had a pleasant surprise with their Dark Roast and Regular Blend coffees! Arabica coffee beans and fresh brew hit the spot!.0 points
Braum's (Denison, TX)
Rating: "It'll Do"
Stopped by the fast-food restaurant for a quick breakfast. Needed a caffiene fix before moving on. Coffee will do but better stick with ice cream and sundaes when ordering food!0 points
Burger King (Van Alstyne, TX)
Rating: "Good"
Had a happy suprise at Burger King. Tasted their "Turbo" blend; made for a good choice in black coffees! Gonna keep this one in mind while on the road!0 points
Sonic Drive In
Rating: "It'll Do"
Had a piping hot cup of java for breakfast. Found it lacking to pull it over to a "Good" rating but "It'll Do"!0 points
Muldoon's Coffehouse (College Station, TX)
Rating: "Good"
Was on the road and found a coffeehouse in College Station offering a dark roast in their house blend. Made for a good cup of coffee; even better with the free wifi access to the internet and the friendly Texas A&M atmosphere!0 points
Legend's Coffee - Texas Pecan Roast
Rating: "Good"
Back on the road and found another offering iin Bryan, Texas - Legend's Coffee in a Texas Pecan Roast blend. Has a taste of pecan and a medium roasted bean that made for a good cup of coffee - especially while getting back on the road!0 points
CEFE's Convenience Store - Robust Bean (Kosse, TX)
Rating: "Good"
Was surprised by this fresh brewed pot of coffee from a small Texas town convenience store. Bought it because it was on sale for 99 cents. Dark roast with a strong black coffee flavor that we like. Could be it was freshly brewed, could be we got lucky, could be a number of reasons. Bottomline: Will buy this one again when we pass by the area in the future!0 points
Petro (Iron Skillet) Petro's Extreme (Weatherford, TX)
Rating: "Good"
A dark roast offered by Petro that was as good as its advertisement! Brewed fresh and piping hot, it hit the spot - especially on a long road trip to West Texas! Will buy this one again next time we are in the area!0 points
TNT Convenience Store (Bridgeport, TX) - Farmer Brothers Gourmet Coffee
Rating: "It'll Do"
Made an emergency stop while on the road.... Needed a shot of java and a sugar rush from coffee cakes. Tried a dark roast from Farmer Brothers Gourmet Coffee. Rated as "It'll Do" because it provided the much needed caffiene but the taste just did not place it in ther "Good" rating. Skipping this one next time we are in the area, going to try another place instead... unless it is another emergency "caffiene" stop!0 points
Chocktaw Casino, Too (Durant, OK) - Henderson Coffee Dark Roast
Rating: "Good"
On the road again; this round was in Oklahoma. While passing the Chocktaw Casino, stopped at the convenience store between the Hotel and Event Center. Needed a coffee fix as it was early morning. Poured a cup of Henderson Coffee in a dark roast blend. Great tasting coffee! Going to make this a regular stop when passing through.0 points
Quick Trip (Plano, TX) - Java Alarm Select Blend
Rating: "Good"
Offering from a convenience store in Texas. Limited availability and noted for its energy caffiene, really liked this one. Went well with a big apple fritter, too!0 points
Brewed Awakenings Sandwich Shop (Groesbeck, TX) - Nescafe Black Coffee
Rating: "Good"
Lots of pastries, sandwiches, and desserts. Limited coffee selection. That said, coffee is brewed fresh one serving at a time. Was not expecting much from the coffee machine, but ended up liking this one enough to give it a "Good" rating. Piping hot and fresh brewed made the difference.... plus a long road trip helped.0 points
Love's Truck Stop (Ennis, TX - I45, Exit 272) - Java Amore's Brazilian Primo Rich
Rating: "It'll Do"
On the road again needing a coffee break. Stopped for gas and a cup of coffee at Love's Truck Stop. Tried this dark roasted blend and decided it needed more of something. Rated it as "It'll Do" because there was no bitter aftertaste else it would have been rated as "Bad"! Skip this one and pick something else; drink only in emergencies!0 points
Java City (Sprint Campus, Overland Park, KS) - Holiday Blend
Rating: "Good"
Stopped for a coffee break while at a meeting at Sprint's Campus. Tried a dark roast considered "lively and bold" to get a coffee fix. Offering hit the spot.... Will come back for more refills in the future!0 points
IHOP (Reno, NV) - Endless Pot of Coffee
Rating: "Good"
Confirmed an old standby - IHOP's coffee continues to be a good cup of coffee. Served fresh and hot. Cannot miss with this one!0 points
Exxon Convenience Store (Waco) - Douwe Egberts
Rating: "It'll Do"
Emergency stop for coffee while on the road called for a quick stop at an Exxon Convenience Store in Waco just off of I35! Did not rate this one high even if it has been around since the 1700's... Douwe Egberts(?)!0 points
Central Market's Cafe - Signature Blend Medium Roast
Rating: "It'll Do"
While shopping at a local grocery store, stopped by their Cafe for some hot java.... Needed some wake up juice to get the blood pumping for a rousing round of grocery shopping! Tried there "go green" Signature Blend in a medium roast. Nothing special... it did the job to get through the shopping, else... had better!0 points
Race Trac - Vanilla Thrilla
Rating: "Good"
Needed a coffee fix.... stopped by Race Trac cause it was close by. Tried the Vanilla Thrilla and liked it. Went well with a Buttermilk Cake Donut. Offered in a Medium Blend and all sizes cost 79 cents for the time being!0 points
Race Trac - Molten Java
Rating: "It'll Do"
Getting ready for a road trip. Needed some java to get things going. Picked up a cup of Race Trac's Molten Java - "Dark, Full-Bodied, Earthy, Bold". Strong tasting blend that overpowered the taste buds... gritty is the word that came to mind. Only saving grace is that it went well with a Chocolate Frosted, Buttermilk Cake Donut!0 points
CEFCO Convenience Store - Texas Pecan (Mexia, TX)
Rating: "It'll Do"
Stopped for a cup of coffee in Mexia, Texas while on a road trip. Tried the Texas Pecan Roast. The hint of pecan was noted but was not enough to bump the rating to a "Good" cup of coffee. Works for a road trip when the craving for caffiene must be satisfied, else pass on this one!0 points
Race Trac - Watt Up!
Rating: "It'll Do"
Stopped by Race Trac for a cup of coffee beore a road trip. Went with the Watt Up coffee, a medium roast blend that is highly caffeinated. Nothing special... rated it as "It'll Do". Works for a wake up call, but better with an Apple Fritter.0 points
Gateway - Mother Parkers Texas Pecan
Rating: "Good"
While on the way to a meeting in Dallas, stopped at a Gateway Gas Station for a cup of coffee and some Nutter Butter cookies. Brand they carry is Mother Parkers Coffee.... chose the Texas Pecan blend. Rated it as "Good" especially like it with the Nutter Butter cookies!0 points
Chocktaw Casino, Too (Durant, OK) - Henderson Coffee Premium Blend
Rating: "Good"
Back on the road and recalled having a good cup of coffee here, Stopped for another cup of coffee at Chocktaw Casino's convenience store between the Hotel and Event Center. Was not disappointed. Great tasting coffee!0 points

Offered in a variety of blends but really liking the traditional blend in dark. Has a distinctive taste straight from New Orleans. This one is a keeper!0 points
Folgers Classic Roast
Rating: "Good"
One staple picked up at the local grocery store. Usually pick the blend based on "what is on sale" with medium being common. Regardless, makes a good cup of coffee!0 points
Hills Brothers
Rating: "Good"
Another one available at most grocery stores. Also, chosen based on "what is on sale". In this case, go for the dark blend. Safe bet for a good cup of coffee, especially when the funds are running low!0 points
Yuban Premium Coffee
Rating: "Good"
Available at most grocery stores and likely hidden among the more widely known brands is Yuban. Picked up their medium roast and was pleasantly surprised given the "Rainforest Alliance Certified" rating and 30% recycleable material labeling. Was expecting a "veggie" taste to the coffee. Instead, enjoyed a nice brew of "coffee, just black"!0 points
Cafe' Bustelo Cafe Espresso
Rating: "Good"
Picked this one up at the Neighborhood Walmart Grocery Store. A dark roast made specifically for Demi-tasse, Cappuccino, Espresso, and Iced Coffee. Ignored the label and brewed it like we do with all our Coffee. Result: A good cup of coffee that was surprisingly smooth; really liking this one!0 points
French Market Coffee and Chicory
Rating: "Good"
Tried this one on a whim. Picked it out while shopping at Krogers Grocery Store. A medium-dark roast blend with a distinctive taste of chicory! Made since 1890, French Market Coffee and Chicory offers a stronger but less bitter brew with - oops, less caffeine, than pure coffee. That said, we rate this one as a good cup of coffee.0 points
Chock full o'Nuts
Rating: "Good"
Tried their 100% Columbian Blend made from Arabica coffee beans. Considered a Medium-Dark Roast that makes for a good cup of coffee. Liked this one! Its been around since 1932 and originated in New York.0 points
Folgers' Classic Roast - Hazlenut Blend
Rating: "It'll Do"
Bought a can of Folgers' Classic Roast in the Hazlenut Blend. It will do but the flavoring puts too much of a twist on a Black Coffee Drinker's taste buds. Next time, going with the straight Classic Roast Dark Blend!0 points
Maxwell House - Medium Dark Roast
Rating: "Good"
Bought a can of Maxwell House's coffee in the Medium Dark Roast. Made for a good cup of coffee; glad to have bought this one on a whim while at a local convenience store!0 points
Maxwell House - South Pacific Blend
Rating: "It'll Do"
Bought another can of Maxwell House coffee. This time went with the South Pacific Blend. Was not as good as the Medium Dark Roast. Rated the blend as "It'll Do" because of the high expectation from the Medium Dark Roast.0 points
Maxwell House - Columbian Blend
Rating: "It'll Do"
Tried another can of Maxwell House coffee. Went with the Columbian Blend. Still not as good as the Medium Dark Roast. Rated the blend as "It'll Do" for the same reason given for the Pacific Blend.... high expectation from the Medium Dark Roast.0 points
Community Coffee - Between Roast
Rating: "Good"
Another blend by the java makers in New Orleans. This another keeper! "Between Roast" blend is semi-sweet and full bodied; just like our preference in women! Screams for a chocolate covered apple fritter.0 points
Kroger Coffee Singles
Rating: "Good"
Bought this one while preparing for a hunting trip. Wanted a quick means to brew up a cup of coffee without having to cook a full pot on the fire. Found these at the local grocery store. Easy to make - boil water, pour into a cup, and then set the "coffee bag" in the cup and let it brew like a "tea bag"! Tasted just like a fresh brew, for a darker blend add more "coffee bags"!0 points
Medaglio D'Oro - Cafe Espresso Italian Roast
Rating: "Good"
Picked up a new blend from an imported coffee.... Finely ground but brews nicely in the coffee maker. Piping hot and tasty. Really like this one; will buy it again!0 points
Starbucks House Blend
Rating: "Good"
While shopping at a local drugstore found this one from Starbucks. It is their House Blend offered in a Medium Roast! The labels says, "Lively and Tasty". Tend to agree with it. Giving it a "Good" rating!0 points
Peppermill Resort and Casino - European Coffeehouse Blend (Reno, NV)
Rating: "Good"
While on the road made a cup of coffee using the "singles" coffee packets provided in the hotel room. Pleasantly surprised with this 100% arabica specialty coffee!0 points
Melitta European Indulgence
Rating: "Good"
Found this one at the grocery store - 100% Columbian in a medium roast offered by Melitta. Makes a good cup of coffee, just be sure to keep it hot. Tends to diminish in flavor as the pot stays on the warmer.0 points
Kroger Private Selection - Seattle Cafe House Blend
Rating: "Good"
Bought this one at a Kroger Grocery Store. A dark roast that made for a great tasting coffee. Going to remember this one... and definitely will buy again!0 points
Eight O'Clock - Orginal Blend
Rating: "Good"
Chose this one as I passed it in the Coffee Aisle at the local grocery store. New packaging from an old brand.... Had never tried it before. Brewed up a pot and was happy to say it makes a good cup of coffee!0 points
Kauai Coffee Company - Bold Single Estate
Rating: "Good" TEAM's FIRST CHOICE FOR BLACK COFFEE
Ran low on coffee at the house. Made a run to the neighborhood grocery store and found this offering from Hawaii! Really liked this one, rating this one "Good" but with one additional comment.... Consider this our NUMBER ONE CHOICE for coffee!0 points
Kauai Coffee Company - Medium Roast Single Estate
Rating: "Good" TEAM's SECOND CHOICE FOR BLACK COFFEE
Decided to go out on a limb and try the Medium Roast Single Estate blend. Was worried as we have been disappointed in the past with other brands. That is, changing blends of a brand we like does not gaurantee a good cup of coffee. Luckily, we were not disappointed. This one earns a "Good" rating but can easily bump the first choice - Bold Single Estate! Consider this our NUMBER TWO CHOICE since we cannot have a tie for first place.0 points
Sam's Choice Sumatra - Dark Roast
Rating: "Good"
Picked this one up at the Neighborhood Walmart Store! Sanm's Choice Brand that made for a good cup of coffee. Doesn't beat Kauai Coffee Company's offerings but still a good pick from a "House Brand"!0 points
#23 Java City Donut Shop Blend - Dark Roast
Rating: "Good"
Here is one we chose while grocery shopping. Not sure about the brand or how long they have been around, but.... it does make a good cup of coffee! Picked the Dark Roast blend this round. Will need to try their Medium Roast next round.0 points
Kauai Coffee Company - Vanilla Macadamia Medium Roast
Rating: "Good"
Another coffee from the Hawaiin Kauai Coffee Company that makes for a good cup of coffee! Really liking this brand!0 points
Folgers Gourmet Selections - Morning Cafe
Rating: "Good"
Light roasted blend that makes a surprisingly good cup of coffee. Picked this one up at the grocery store and noticed that Folgers is offering gourmet coffee blends. So far, am good with their "Morning Cafe" offering! .0 points
Eight O'Clock Coffee - French Vanilla Ground
Rating: "Good"
Had tried another blend of this brand and had no issues with it. Have no issues with the French Vanilla blend either. Makes a good cup of coffee. Can taste the Vanilla but is not overpowering like other blends have a tendency to do.0 points
Master Chef - Ground Coffee
Rating: "Good"
Bought this one for $1.88 at the grocery store. A generic brand that makes a good cup of coffee. Cannot beat the price; taste as good as other more costly brands! Keep this one in your backpocket when the funds are low.0 points
Sam's Choice - French Roast Dark Blend
Rating: "It'll Do"
Was hoping this one would be as good or better than their inexpensive "Master Chef" offering, Unfortunately, Walmart's Sam's Choice in the French Roast left something lacking. Rating this one as "It'll Do". Stay with the "Master Chef" Coffee.0 points
Maxwell House Breakfast Blend
Rating: "Good"
Like the other blends offered by Maxwell House this one gets a good rating! Nice taste that goes well with our Nutty Buddies!0 points

Port Aransas, Texas Souvenier Shop
Another one we liked while on the road. This one comes from Port Aransas, Texas. It is a coffee cup offered by a souvenier shop that suggests one way to cut back on coffee. Not sure why one would do so, but regardless this suggestion is okay from our view!
