Black Conservatives

Let's start with the obvious incongruity: I'm a white guy! I'm a life-long conservative (with strong libertarian leanings).
To most people "black" and "conservative" go together like oil and water. They seem to be mutually exclusive. Like the unicorn, the general population has heard of this odd, mythical, aberrant character, but never really met one. Much less read what they have to say.
This is my humble tribute to some wonderful, erudite and sensible people who don't get enough attention or credit. Maybe someday I'll have the pleasure of meeting some of them.

Author's Note: The order and grouping of any individuals on this page are mostly a result of my experiences and should not be misconstrued as an implication of importance or influence. The application of the label and implications of "conservative" to the people included here is strictly mine not and necessarily theirs.

Clarence Thomas

Supreme Court Justice

Justice Clarence Thomas
b - June 23, 1948

In my opinion Clarence Thomas should be at the top of this list. As only the second African-American to be appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States, replacing Thurgood Marshall, Justice Thomas is truly an engaging and inspiring figure. He has routinely received criticism and derision due to his conservative and originalist viewpoints.
For justice Thomas' biographic information and court rulings see Cornell's Legal Information Institute, The Oyez Project, and Wikipedia. Here's the Google results for Justice Clarence Thomas.

Condoleeza Rice served as the 66th United Sates Secretary of State and was Pres. George W. Bush's National Security Advisor during his first term. She is a professor, diplomat, author and national security expert. In March 2009, Rice returned to Stanford University as a political science professor and a Senior Fellow on Public Policy at the Hoover Institution.
Rice changed her political affiliation from Democrat to Republican in 1982 when she grew adverse to former president Jimmy Carter's foreign policy. She followed her father's precedent in switching political parties. In her words to the 2000 Republican National Convention, "My father joined our party because the Democrats in Jim Crow Alabama of 1952 would not register him to vote. The Republicans did."

The Black Snob - Black Conservatives On Obama

A View From The Other Side

In my research I ran across the Black Snob blog. About a year ago the writer of the blog, Danielle Belton, did a series of articles about several black conservative wondering which would "vote for history and which would hold fast to their views and vote party." Included are articles on Condoleeza Rice, Thomas Sowell, Shelby Steele, Ward Connerly, Michael Steele, John McWhorter and more. They make for pretty good reading and are generally a measured and reasonable view of black conservatives by a liberal black woman.

Take a look at the index post for links to all of the articles in the series.

In my opinion someone's political persuasion and the color of their skin should be unrelated. As a leader within our Kleeneze business we study leaders from all walks of life and have just read Nelson Mandela's "A long walk to Freedom". A great insight into a true leader and I'd recommend the book irrespective of your political views or background.

Wow. What a well done lens. I wasn't familiar with Shelby Steele. Also didn't know Joseph Phillips was a conservative. I met Michael Steele several years ago. Nice guy. But I don't care for him now.

Thank you for putting together this information. I've even read some of the blogs you have here and seen the PJTV contributors. I lensrolled this to my Conservative Pagans lens. I can appreciate the stares of disbelief someone can get because they don't fit other people's preconceived notions of what a conservative is.
